His name was Antenòr, nothing more,

Antenòr stepped out that night,
Thoughts churning, taking flight,
Like banners in the air they flew,
But eyes narrowed, a hardened crew,
Face tight, a visage grim and cold,
Like he'd seen all there is to behold,
At that age when you believe,
You've done all you'll ever achieve.

A horse's whinny, where and when?
A woman's laughter, where again?
The moon, a shield of white so stark,
A wagon with its shafts up in the dark,
Guitar, idleness, and words unsaid,

The pump, a memory, tired and worn,
That black grass like a sea forlorn,
Maybe it was romantic, you could say,

Antenòr asked for a drink that night,

How long his tomorrows, eternally.

Just then, someone stepped inside,
From darkness into light he hied,
Insulted him, a whisper low,
But it felt like a scream, you know,

Like a spit, a foul disgrace,
Antenòr looked, surprised and caught,
Studied him, but knew him not,
The reason hung there, unexplained,
Among the people, still and strained,
And he wouldn't know, it remained,
He wouldn't know, the truth unchained.

Then he heard a woman's name,
Forgotten or unknown, it's all the same,
How often for others, life takes hold,
What for us is just a minute, old,
He looked at the men, searching for a sign,
Eyes, dialogue, a reason to define,
But if he found no condemnation there,
He found no absolution, no one to care.

Antenòr stepped outside that door,
Balancing his knife, ready for war,
To dance unwillingly the steps,
The rhythms of the duel, where life intercepts,
A woman he couldn't recall,
And a man he'd never seen at all,
Bound him to them, a curious tie,
Like verses with a rhyming cry.

He feinted low, then sidestepped fast,
So many eyes upon him cast,
He felt both better and so tired,
Like a smile that fate had conspired,
What a night, all turned around,
Nothing to remember, nothing profound,
He pointed the blade, a flash of steel,
Saw the blood spurt, making it real.

It all happened in a flash of light,
Antenòr breathing hard, with all his might,
He made a gesture, hand outstretched,
Looked at the other, understanding etched,
That it had all been in vain,
The other sought death, to end the pain,
And he knew he had to do it, fast,
There was no reason, this moment wouldn't last,
No reason to take his life away,
The other fell, with nothing to say,
And he wouldn't know, not today,
He wouldn't know, come what may.

Antenòr watched him fall that night,
Heard voices say, "It's your fault, your plight,"
Heard them say, "He was a man, it's true,"
Heard them say, "Run away, it's through,"
Justice declared him an outlaw bold,
But a poet would have told,
He was like the Wandering Jew,
Like the cursed Dutchman, through and through.

How many times have we faced the wall,
Found ourselves trapped, about to fall,
How many times have we struck in rage,
How many times endured the hard stage,
How many things born from a mistake,
How many errors, for goodness sake,
How many times the horizon's line,
Goes no further than this nose of mine.
