Mio vecchio amico di giorni e pensieri da quanto tempo che ci conosciamo,
Venticinque anni son tanti e diciamo un po' retorici che sembra ieri.
Invece io so che è diverso e tu sai quello che il tempo ci ha preso e ci ha dato:
Io appena giovane sono invecchiato, tu forse giovane non sei stato mai.

Ma d' illusioni non ne abbiamo avute, o forse si, ma nemmeno ricordo,
Tutte parole che si son perdute con la realtà incontrata ogni giorno.

Chi glielo dice a chi è giovane adesso di quante volte si possa sbagliare,
Fino al disgusto di ricominciare perché ogni volta è poi sempre lo stesso.
Eppure il mondo continua e va avanti con noi o senza e ogni cosa si crea
Su ciò che muore e ogni nuova idea su vecchie idee e ogni gioia su pianti.

Ma più che triste ora è buffo pensare a tutti i giorni che abbiamo sprecati,
A tutti gli attimi lasciati andare e ai miti belli delle nostre estati.

Dopo l'inverno e l' angoscia in città quei lunghi mesi sdraiati davanti,
Liberazione del fiume e dei monti e linfa aspra della nostra età.
Quei giorni spesi a parlare di niente sdraiati al sole inseguendo la vita,
Come l' avessimo sempre capita, come qualcosa capito per sempre.

Il mio Leopardi, le tue teologie: "Esiste Dio?" Le risate più pazze,
Le sbornie assurde, le mie fantasie, le mie avventure in città con ragazze.

Poi quell' amore alla fine reale tra le canzoni di moda e le danze:
"E' in gamba sai, legge Edgar Lee Masters. Mi ha detto no, non dovrei mai pensare."
Le sigarette con rabbia fumate, i blue jeans vecchi e le poche lire,
Sembrava che non dovesse finire, ma ad ogni autunno finiva l' estate.

Poi tutto è andato e diciamo siam vecchi, ma cosa siamo e che senso ha mai questo
Nostro cammino di sogni fra specchi, tu che lavori quand' io vado a letto.

Io dico sempre non voglio capire, ma è come un vizio sottile e più penso
Più mi ritrovo questo vuoto immenso e per rimedio soltanto il dormire.
E poi ogni giorno mi torno a svegliare e resto incredulo, non vorrei alzarmi,
Ma vivo ancora e son lì ad aspettarmi le mie domande, il mio niente, il mio male...

My old friend of days and thoughts how long have we known each other,
