A Rimini la spiaggia com'è vuota, quasi inutile di marzo,
Deserta dell' estate, in ogni simbolo imbecille e vacanziera
E noi, senza nemmeno un poco d' ironia, fra gusci e quarzo,
Ad inventare insieme primavera.

Era piovuto piano e senza pause quasi fino a quel momento,
Picchiando sopra ai pali della spiaggia il mare si spezzava in lembi;
Nel ristorante vuoto il cameriere, assorto e lento,
Cifrava il rebus dei cumulonembi.

Compiendo poi quel rito inevitabile e abusato,
Corremmo coraggiosi e scalzi lungo la battigia:
Di un verde di bottiglia era quel mare affaticato, l'aria una stanza grigia...

Scoprimmo che oggi il mare lascia un povero relitto,
Naufragi di catrame e di lattine arrugginite:
Parlare era soltanto un altro inutile delitto contro le nostre vite...

Parlare, poi di cosa? Di quel vino troppo freddo e un poco andato?
O di quel fritto misto dato lì con malagrazia naturale?
A chi è triste di suo come un limone già adoperato
Dà ancora più tristezza mangiar male...

E dire che volevo regalarti un compleanno un po' diverso,
Ma in noi turisti fuori di stagione c'era tutto di sbagliato:
La notte, già una cosa andata via, il mattino perso
E il pomeriggio forse già sciupato...

Però malgrado tutto si era stati bene assieme,
Così, senza un futuro, in incertezza intenerita.
Pensavo: "Farlo o no? Parlare o no? Restare assieme e poi cambiarsi vita?

Ma se fossimo stati un'altra coppia fra le tante
Avremmo trasformato tutto in quella poca gioia
O avremmo litigato per sfogare ad ogni istante l'urlare della noia?

Domanda forse inutile, com'era forse inutile quel giorno,
Da prendere così come veniva, senza calcolare il resto;
Ci salutammo in fretta e in fretta anch'io feci ritorno:
Di marzo si fa sera ancora presto...

The beach in Rimini is so empty, almost useless in March,
Deserted in the summer, in every symbol of stupidity and vacation

It had rained softly and without pauses almost until that moment,
Crashing on the beach poles, the sea broke into pieces;
In the empty restaurant, the waiter, absorbed and slow,

Then performing that inevitable and abused rite,
We ran brave and barefoot along the shore:
That tired sea was the color of a bottle green, the air a gray room...

We discovered that today the sea leaves a poor wreck,
Shipwrecks of tar and rusty cans:
Talking was just another useless crime against our lives...

Speak, then of what? Of that wine too cold and a little gone?
Or of that mixed fry given there with natural bad grace?
To one who is sad as a lemon already used
Eating badly makes him even sadder...

And to say that I wanted to give you a birthday a little different,
But in us tourists out of season there was everything wrong:
The night, already a thing gone by, the morning lost
And the afternoon perhaps already wasted...

But despite everything, we had a good time together,
So, without a future, in tender uncertainty.
I thought, "To do it or not? To speak or not? To stay together and then change my life?

But if we had been another couple among the many
We would have turned everything into that little joy
Or would we have fought to vent the screaming of boredom at every moment?

Perhaps a useless question, as perhaps that day was useless,
To be taken as it came, without thinking about the rest;
We said goodbye in a hurry and in a hurry I too returned:
