The Last Thule

I have sailed around Cape Horn three times
And sailed seven times the seven seas
And I have seen monsters and rare animals
The amphisbaena, the sirens, the unicorn

I used to return proudly to every port
After a fight, after a boarding
I am not the same and I no longer have the courage
To sail on a dead ship

Where is the crew that sailed with me
And indulged in every debauchery?
Where is the strength that surrounded us?
Now it is extinguished, disappeared

I watch the sails hang limp
With the ropes dangling in the void
That flap slowly against the bulkheads
With a continuous motion, without purpose

And I see in the air a senseless dance
Of strange birds against the gray sky
Singing a song in this gray world
A song deaf now, without hope

And here alone I think of my past
I go backwards and rummage through my life
A lost and infinite saga
Of what I have done, of what has been

The untrue truths I believed in
Bursting and scattering around

If I died, I was reborn stronger

To empty the last tankard

The last Thule awaits at the extreme North

In the cold, where we all end up
