Völuspá

Hljóðs bið ek allar helgar kindir,
Meiri ok minni mögu Heimdallar;
Viltu, at ek, Valföðr! vel framtelja
Forn spjöll fíra, þau er fremst um man.
Sól tér sortna, sígr fold í mar,
Hverfa af himni heiðar stjörnur;
Geisar eimi ok aldrnari,
Leikr hár hiti við himin sjalfan.
Bræðr munu berjask ok at bönum verðask,
Munu systrungar sifjum spilla;
Skelfr Yggdrasils askr standandi,
Ymr it aldna tré, en jötunn losnar.

Silence I ask all holy beings,
Greater and lesser, children of Heimdall;
You wish that I, Allfather! well tell
Ancient tales of mankind, when first he was remembered.
Sun turns black, earth sinks into the sea,
From heaven bright stars disappear;
Steam roils and swells, and the ancient tree,
Hot embers blaze on the heavens themselves.
Brothers will fight and fall by each other's hand,
Sisters' children will spoil their kin;
Yggdrasil ash trembles as it stands,
The ancient tree groans, and the giant breaks free.
