Þríar rætr standa á þría vega
Undan aski Yggdrasils;
Hel býr und einni, annarri hrímþursar,
Þriðju mennskir menn.

Askr Yggdrasils drýgir erfiði
Meira en menn um viti:
Hjörtr bítr ofan, en á hliðu fúnar,
Skerðir Niðhöggr neðan.

The Three Roots

Three roots stand upon three paths
Underneath the ash Yggdrasil;
Hel dwells under one, frost giants under another,
Mortal men under the third.

The ash Yggdrasil suffers more
Than men know it withstands:
A hart bites its leaves above, on its side the squirrels,
Below, Nidhogg gnaws the roots.
