Der Mensch geht durch das Publikum nach Hause –
Die Vorstellung ist aus, die Zeit ist knapp!

Die Rolle war zu klein, weil man ihn unterschätzte
"Die Großen hab'n es leichter!", denkt er bös'
Doch keiner ist der erste, keiner ist der letzte
Drum mach dir nichts daraus
Und geh nicht bös nach Haus –
Die Angelegenheit ist noch nicht aus!

Du hast ja noch dein Grab, um dich drin zu freuen!
Du hast ja noch den Tod und was nachher bleibt!
Sobald dein Hirn verfault, wirst du nichts bereuen
Und dann gibt es niemand, der dich weitertreibt!
Da liegst du dann und siehst nicht einmal die Vögel
Erinnerst dich auch nicht an die liebe Frau!
Du frisst kein altes Brot, kaust auch keine Nägel –
Deinen Namen weißt du auch nicht mehr genau!
Na, ist das nicht ein Spaß
Keiner sagt dir, wie und wo und was
Keiner wirft dich weg,
Keiner hebt dich auf, keiner schlägt dich klein!
Ja, der Tod ist eine Lust
Und du kannst auch furzen, wenn du musst
Denn der Himmel hat dir nichts mehr zu verzeih'n!
Drum freu dich keines Lohnes und keiner Titel
Und bau auf keinen endgültigen Vertrag!
Der Zweck, für den du lebst, heiligt keine Mittel
Freu dich lieber auf die Qual
Auf die Krankheit, aufs Spital –
Freu dich nur auf deinen letzten Tag!

Die Glücklichen sind längst vorangegangen
Die Unglücklichen zählen noch ihr Geld
Die ganze Welt steht angestellt in Schlangen
Und jeder wartet, bis sein Stichwort fällt!
Der Mut ist klein, die Mädchen sind vergessen
Die Angst ist groß, die Hoffnung zählt nicht viel!
Die Körperlänge wird dir noch einmal gemessen
Und liegst du nicht bequem
So ist das kein Problem
Es dauert nicht sehr lang, und außerdem:

Du kriegst ja noch dein Grab, um dich drin zu drehen
Das einzige Ding im Leben, das du sicher kriegst!
Und sollte dort das Drehen irgendwie nicht gehen
Na dann bleibst du eben liegen, wie du liegst!
Im Leben lagst du auch, wie man's dir befohlen –
Gewöhn's dir auch im Grab immer wieder an –
Denn eines Tages wird man dich wieder holen
Weil man dich nicht einfach liegenlassen kann!
Jawohl, egal, ob's dir gefällt
Du kommst immer wieder auf die Welt
Einmal in Berlin, einmal im Tessin oder in der USA!
Zuerst wirst du zu Dreck
Irgendjemand kommt und nimmt ihn weg
Haucht ihm Leben ein – dann bist du wieder da!
Drum freu dich nicht zu früh auf die schöne Ruhe
Auch nicht auf was im Himmel noch kommen mag
Du bleibst nur kurze Zeit ohne enge Schuhe
Freu dich lieber auf den Wein
Auf die Mädchen zwischendrein –
Freu dich nur auf deinen ersten Tag!

Vielleicht kommst du als Kalb und wirst geschlachtet –
Vielleicht kommst du als Veilchen, dann wirst du gepflückt!
Als Stinktier wirst du bestenfalls verachtet –
Als Floh wirst du in jungen Jahr'n zerdrückt!
Doch kommst du gar als Mensch – das ist das schlimmste!
Weil Menschen zwar begreifen, was ihnen geschieht
Und doch sind sie von allen Tier'n das dümmste!
Sie machen es sich schwer
Das tut sonst niemand mehr
Doch sorg dich nicht und sag dir wie vorher:

Du hast ja noch dein Grab, um dich drin zu freuen!
Du hast ja noch die Zeit, in der du zerfällst
Und dienst vielleicht als Pfuhl irgendwelchen Säuen
Bis du dich zum Schluss zu ihnen selbst gesellst!
Für Menschen gilt dasselbe wie für Mikroben
Für Säugetier, für Fisch oder für Insekt:
Die Freude ist im Grund ziemlich selten oben –
Meistens bleibt sie unten tief im Grab versteckt!
Daraus kann man erseh'n
Wieviel wir vom Leben nicht versteh'n
Einmal fängt es an, einmal hört es auf – Ende des Berichts!
Soweit man bisher sah
Ist die Welt zu andern Zwecken da
Nur ein Zufall ist das Leben, weiter nichts!
Drum freu dich nicht zu früh auf ein langes Leben
Und freu dich nicht aufs Grab, denn das steht schon fest
Die Freude, die du fühlst, trifft ja ganz daneben
Weil die Freude – sieh nur her –
Immer weiter, immer mehr
Immer schneller unsre Welt verlässt!

You Still Have Your Grave

Man walks through the audience towards home –
The performance is over, time is short!
He still bows to the last friendly applause
Then shrugs his shoulders and walks off!
The role was too small because they underestimated him
"The big shots have it easier!", he thinks spitefully
But no one is the first, no one is the last
So don't worry about it
And don't go home angry –
The matter is not over yet!

You still have your grave to rejoice in!
You still have death and what remains after!
As soon as your brain rots, you won't regret anything
And then there will be no one to push you further!
There you lie and don't even see the birds
You don't even remember your dear wife!
You don't eat stale bread, don't chew your nails –
You don't even remember your name exactly anymore!
Now, isn't that fun
No one tells you how, where, and what
No one throws you away,
No one picks you up, no one beats you down!
Yes, death is a pleasure
And you can fart too, if you have to
Because heaven has nothing left to forgive you for!
So don't be happy about any reward or title
And don't rely on any final contract!
The purpose for which you live does not justify any means
Rather rejoice in the pain
In illness, in the hospital –
Just be happy for your last day!

The lucky ones have long since gone ahead
The unlucky ones are still counting their money
The whole world is queuing up
And everyone is waiting for their cue!
Courage is small, girls are forgotten
Fear is great, hope doesn't count for much!
Your body length will be measured again
And if you don't lie comfortably
It's not a problem
It won't be long, and besides:

You still get your grave to turn around in
The only thing in life you're sure to get!
And should turning around not work out somehow
Well then you just lie there as you lie!
In life you also lay as you were told –
Get used to it again and again in the grave –
Because one day you will be fetched again
Because they can't just leave you lying around!
Yes, no matter if you like it
You always come back into the world
Once in Berlin, once in Ticino or in the USA!
First you become dirt
Someone comes and takes it away
Breathes life into it - then you're back!
So don't rejoice too soon about the beautiful peace
Not even about what may still come in heaven
You only stay a short time without tight shoes
Rather rejoice in the wine
In the girls in between –
Just be happy for your first day!

Maybe you come as a calf and get slaughtered –
Maybe you come as a violet, then you are picked!
As a skunk you are at best despised –
As a flea you will be crushed in your young years!
But if you come as a human being - that's the worst!
Because although people understand what is happening to them
Yet they are the dumbest of all animals!
They make it difficult for themselves
Nobody else does that anymore
But don't worry and tell yourself as before:

You still have your grave to rejoice in!
You still have the time in which you decompose
And maybe serve as a puddle for some pigs
Until you finally join them yourself!
The same applies to humans as to microbes
For mammals, for fish or for insects:
Joy is basically quite rarely at the top –
Most of the time it remains hidden deep down in the grave!
From this one can see
How much we do not understand about life
Once it starts, once it stops – end of report!
As far as one has seen so far
The world is there for other purposes
Life is just a coincidence, nothing more!
So don't rejoice too soon about a long life
And don't rejoice in the grave, for that is already certain
The joy you feel is completely misplaced
Because the joy – just look –
Always further, always more
Is always faster leaving our world!
