Es geht ein Klang von Kälte durch die Welt
Die Ohren der Genossen
Sind geschlossen
Und ein Lied - wer hört das noch?
Wen stört das noch?

Erwartet umsomehr von harten Menschen!
Wer einmal quält, wird's immer wieder tun
Die Qual nach Plan
Den Gewohnheitshass
Lernt jeder leicht
Und Nachwuchs gibt's en masse

Geh und sing einmal ein Lied dem Kanzler vor!
Er dankt es dir - und bleibt der gleiche, der er war
Sing ein Lied für Flüchtlinge
Für jemand, der im Zuchthaus langsam stirbt
Für Kinder, die die Fürsorge verdirbt
Für einen im Verhör der Polizei
Für Gepeinigte, Gesteinigte
Egal wohin du singst, es bleibt belanglos
Das Leben schreibt die stärkere Musik

Die Menschheit wird sich eines Tags befassen
Zusammenhänge da und dort erkennen
Die Wahrheit in gemäßer Art erzählen
Das Ende ihrer Knechtschaft proklamieren
Und überall bei reich und arm
Wird's weise sein und warm

Die Lieder werden nur daneben steh'n dabei
Und ganz vergeblich sein - und frei!

Don't expect too much from my songs!
A sound of coldness goes through the world
The ears of the comrades
Are shut
And a song - who still hears that?
Who still cares?

Expect all the more from hard people!
Whoever torments once will do it again and again
Torment by design
Habitual hatred
Everyone learns easily
And there's mass recruitment

Go and sing a song to the Chancellor!
He thanks you - and remains the same as he was
Sing a song for refugees
For someone who is slowly dying in prison
For children whom social services corrupt
For someone in police interrogation
For the tortured, the stoned
No matter where you sing, it remains irrelevant
Life writes the stronger music

Humanity will one day concern itself
Will recognise connections here and there
Will tell the truth in a moderate way
Will proclaim the end of their servitude
And everywhere with rich and poor
It will be wise and warm

The songs will only stand beside it
And be quite futile - and free!
