Στα μοναστήρια προσευχές, στα καπηλιά κουβέντες
και στα βαμμένα βλέφαρα γκρεμός για τους λεβέντες.

Του μήλου τα δαγκώματα αιώνιοι μπελάδες
και τα κορίτσια τα παλιά αθόρυβες μανάδες.

Ανοίγει το ζεστό ψωμί, αχνός τριανταφυλλένιος
ανοίγει και μια φυλακή, να βγει ο δικασμένος.

Τα βήματα, τα τρίμματα, του δρόμου κατακάθι,
της αγοράς τα κρίματα, του έρωτα τα πάθη.

Στη βάση του αντίχειρα το μαύρο μονοπάτι
και στην πλατεία του χωριού οι εκβολές του Ευφράτη.

Κάτω από φύλλα κίτρινα κοιμούνται καπετάνιοι
κι αυτό που χτες περισσεύε αύριο δε θα φτάνει.

Prayers in monasteries, talks in taverns
And cliffs for heroes in painted eyelids.

The bites of the apple eternal troubles
And the old girls silent mothers.

The warm bread opens, a rose-colored mist
A prison also opens, to let out the condemned.

The steps, the crumbs, the sediment of the street,
The sins of the market, the passions of love.

At the base of the thumb the dark path
And at the village square the outflows of the Euphrates.

Captains sleep under yellow leaves
And that which was abundant yesterday will not be enough tomorrow.
