Il avait poussé par hasard, dans notre cour sans le savoir
Comme un aveugle dans le noir, mon arbre.
Il était si petit que c′était mon ami car j'étais tout petit comme lui.
J′attendais de lui le printemps avec deux ou trois fleurs d'argent
Un peu de vert, un peu de blanc, mon arbre
Et ma vie s'accrochait à cet arbre léger
Qui grandissait comme je grandissais.
Je savais qu′à force d′amour, avec un peu d'eau tous les jours
Il ferait exploser la cour, mon arbre
Qu′il grimperait de joie, bien par-dessus mon toit
Pour toucher le soleil de ses doigts.
Quand le printemps nous fut donné, toute la cour le regardait
Se demandant jusqu'où irait, mon arbre.
Mais moi, je savais bien qu′il irait très très loin
Qu'il monterait jusqu′au soleil, au moins.
Un jour il a fallu gagner, j'ai voyagé, j'ai travaillé
Mais je ne l′ai pas oublié, mon arbre.
Si je reviens chez moi et s′il est encore là
Qui sait s'il me reconnaîtra, mon arbre, mon arbre, mon arbre.

My Tree

He had grown there by chance, in our yard without knowing it
Like a blind man in the dark, my tree.
He was so small that he was my friend because I was as small as he was.
I was waiting for him to bring me spring with two or three silver flowers
A little green, a little white, my tree
And my life clung to this light tree
Which grew as I grew.
I knew that with enough love, with a little water every day
He would blow up the yard, my tree
That he would climb with joy, far above my roof
To touch the sun with his fingers.
When spring came to us, the whole yard stared at him
Wondering how far he would go, my tree.
But I knew that he would go very far
That he would climb to the sun, at least.
One day I had to earn my way, I traveled, I worked
But I didn't forget him, my tree.
If I come back home and he's still there
Who knows if he'll recognize me, my tree, my tree, my tree.
