Giocano ai dadi in allegre brigate
Tra stuoli di battone ben pagate
Ed alle quattro del pomeriggio
Spediscono uno schiavo per sondaggio
Che vada al foro e cerchi notizie
Che riferisca i discorsi ascoltati
Quanti contrari e quanti allineati
Questa la vita dei magistrati
Poi si dirigono verso la piazza
Perché non li si accusi di mollezza
Ma in ogni vicolo lungo il cammino
Si attaccano ad un′anfora di vino
E giunti al foro invitano affranti
I testimoni ed i contendenti
Poi mentre quelli si stanno a sgolare
Loro si assentano per orinare
Quando ritornano sopra il palchetto
Dichiarano di aver udito tutto
Poi si riuniscono per il giudizio
E tra di loro non c'è mai uno screzio
Perché si fermano un′ora a parlare
Di vini greci, di arrosti e fritture
Di pesci grassi e di tordi infilzati

They play dice in merry gatherings
Amidst crowds of well-paid prostitutes
And at four in the afternoon
They send a slave on a polling mission
To go to the forum and gather news
To report the speeches he has heard
How many are opposed and how many are aligned
This is the life of the magistrates
Then they head to the square
Lest they be accused of indolence
But in every alley along the way
They attach themselves to an amphora of wine

When they return to the podium
They declare that they have heard everything
Then they gather for judgment
