El caballo de mi padre
Se merece este corrido
Cuando lo estaban velando
Se escuchaban relinchidos
Como que el penco sabía
Que su amo estaba tendido

Era un caballo ya viejo
Arrendado por mi padre
Ya muy poco lo montaba
Lo miraba por las tardes
Le arrimaba su comida
Apoyado por mi madre

Nunca se estuvo sosiego
Aquel grandioso animal
Yo como el hijo mayor
Fui y lo saqué del corral
Lo arrimé hasta donde estaba
Su amo y su fiel caporal

Tuve que abrirle la caja
El penco empezó a temblar
Y le lamía la cara
La gente empezó a llorar
Se retiró solo el cuaco
Muy triste pa su corral

Mi familia fue de acuerdo
Darle el indulto al caballo
Todo el terreno eso pasta
Ya nunca van a ensillarlo
De viejo se va a morir
Mi madre así lo ha ordenado

Me despido de mi historia
El caballo se murió
Y le hicimos sepultura
En el corral que vivió
Así lo pidió mi padre

My Father's Horse

My father's horse,
Deserves this ballad, my love.
As he lay there in his wake,
Neighs could be heard all around,
As if the steed knew somehow,
That his master was lying down.

He was an old horse, dear,
Cherished by my father so.
He rarely rode him anymore,
Just watched him in the afternoons,
Brought him his food each day,
Supported by my mother's way.

Never at rest he'd be,
That magnificent animal.
I, as the eldest son, you see,
Took him out of the corral.
Led him to where he lay at rest,
His master, and his loyalest.

I had to open up the casket, love,
The horse began to tremble then.
He licked my father's face above,
And people started crying, my friend.
The horse retreated on his own,
So sad, back to his stall, alone.

My family all agreed, sweetheart,
To give the horse reprieve.
He grazes all the land, every part,
He'll never be saddled, believe.
He'll die of old age, it is true,
My mother has willed it so, too.

I bid farewell to my story, my dear,
The horse has passed away.
We laid him to rest, no fear,
In the corral where he used to play.
Just as my father had wished it to be,
My mother fulfilled his decree.
