Elle ne bougeait plus déjà d′une moitié,
L'autre est maintenant immobile
Bien qu'elle fût noyée à demi par la nuit
Sa parole était violence
Elle m′a dit "Appelle ce docteur" et lui
Il a fait venir l′ambulance
Ô temps cent fois présent du progrès merveilleux,
Quand la vie et la mort vont vite
Où va ce chariot qui court dans l'Hôtel-Dieu,
L′hôtel où personne n'habite?
D′une main qui pleurait de l'encre sur la mort
Il fallut remplir quelques fiches
Moi, je pris le métro, l′hôpital prit son corps
Ni lui ni elle n'étaient riches
Je revins chaque fois dans les moments permis
J'apportais quelques friandises
Elle me souriait d′un sourire à demi,
De l′eau tombait sur sa chemise
Elle ne bougeait plus, alors elle a pris froid
On avait ouvert la fenêtre
Une infirmière neutre aux gestes maladroits
En son hôtel, Dieu n'est pas maître
La mère m′embrassa sur la main, me bénit
Et moi je ne pouvais rien dire,
En marmonnant "Allons, c'est fini, c′est fini"
Toujours dans un demi-sourire
Cette femme a péché, cette femme a menti
Elle a pensé des choses vaines
Elle a couru, souffert, élevé deux petits,
Si l'autre vie est incertaine
Et si vous êtes là et si vous êtes mûr,
Que sa course soit terminée!
On l′a mise à Pantin dans un coin près du mur,
Derrière, on voit des cheminées

She was laid to rest in Pantin, in a corner near the wall,
