We got a thing here to start off with this morning

The cow broke in the field and eat up the beans

My maw in-law just moved in to stay

My land's so poor, so hard and yeller
You have to sit on a sack of fertilizer to raise an umbrella

The hogs took the cholera and they've all done died
The bees got mad and they left the hive

The well's gone dry and I have to tote the water

The house, it leaks, it needs a new top

The chimney fell down just the other day

The corn meal's gone and the meat runs out

The canned stuff's spoiled else the jar's got broke
All we got left is one old William goat

Nous avons ici un petit quelque chose pour commencer ce matin

Eh bien, je suis allé à la campagne et c'était juste l'autre jour
Pour voir mon oncle Bill et passer un peu de temps
Je lui ai demandé comment il allait depuis mon dernier passage
Il s'est frotté le menton et voici ce qu'il m'a dit

"Maintenant, ma femme a été malade et les petits aussi
Et je suis presque au lit avec la grippe
La vache est tarie et les poules ne pondent pas
Mais on est toujours en vie, alors tout va bien

La vache s'est échappée dans le champ et a mangé les haricots
Les fichus lapins, ils ont eu les navets
Ma belle-mère vient d'emménager pour rester

Mes terres sont si pauvres, si dures et si jaunes

Jusqu'à la source, à environ un kilomètre et demi
Mon aide, il a démissionné pour manque de salaire

La maison, elle fuit, elle a besoin d'un nouveau toit
Quand il pleut, ça mouille tout ce qu'on a
La cheminée est tombée juste l'autre jour

La farine de maïs est partie et la viande s'épuise
On n'a rien pour tuer à mettre dans le fumoir
Le pasteur vient dimanche pour passer la journée

Les conserves sont gâtées ou les bocaux sont cassés
Il ne nous reste qu'un vieux bouc
On va avoir un nouveau bébé vers le début du mois de mai

Ma récolte, elle a pourri dans le sol
J'ai demandé un nouveau prêt, mais le banquier m'a refusé

Alors après tout, tout va plutôt bien"

Je ne suis pas marié dans ma vie, on ne fait que s'asseoir ici
