So sollte man meinen und doch
Erstes Lehrjahr
40 Mark im Monat
Tagesablauf wie folgt:
Morgens um Sieben zum Bus
Brot und Henkelmann in der Aktentasche
Und Ermahnung, Ernst des Lebens,
Lehrjahre sind keine usw,
Dann in der Firma
Pampelmusen, Teebeutel, Jokurt einkaufen
Für die Kollegen zum Frühstück
Dann Wahre auspacken ins Lager einräumen
Etiketten kleben dann Glühbirnen auswechseln
Mittagspause
Dann in den Schaufenster Schuhe Glasplatten abstauben
Dann indem Keller Arbeitsstiefel fetten
Neunzehn Uhr Feierabend
Das ist doch ewig lange her...
Zweites Lehrjahr
60 Mark im Monat
Tagesablauf genau wie im ersten
Nur alle vierzehn Tage Nachtarbeit
Dafür durften wir Abends Warm Essen auf Geschäftskosten
Ich bekam das erst Steak meines Lebens mit vierzehn
Einmal setzte sich der Chef zu uns
Und bestellte sich ein Mettbrötchen
Und erzählte wie er angefangen hat
Mit einem Bauchladen, Schnürsenkel
Durch Fleis und Sparsamkeit
Heute Besitzer einer Ladenkette
Präsiden des deutschen Schuheinzelhandels
Mein erstes Steak ich hbe es wieder ausgekotzt
Das ist doch ewig lange her...
Drittes Lehrjahr
80 Mark im Monat
Tagesablauf wie gehabt
Hinzu kam das bedienen der Kunden in Stoßzeiten
Dann die Verwaltung des Gummistiefellagers
Aufblasen von Reklameluftballons
Und wachsender Unmut unter uns Lehrlingen
Gewerkschaften kannten wir nicht
Aber trotzdem wurde ein Sprecher gewählt
Und das ist in so einem Fall
Immer der naivste oder der mutigste
Ich war beides also sprach ich
Ergebnis: ich bakam das Filzpantoffellager noch dazu
Durfte am Betriebsausflug nich teilnehmen
Und die Kollegen schnitten mich
Das ist doch ewig lange her...
Ende der Lehrzeit
Was hatte ich eigentlich gelernt
So gut wie garnichts
Dann die Prüfung
Alle wussten ich würde durchfallen
Aber ich bestand
Freisprechung mit allen drum und dran
Strechquatet, Reden, Kaufmannsgehilfenbrief, Glückwünsche
Nur die Geschäftsleitung war sauer
Und warum? Sie hätte mich gern durchfallen sehen
Um mich als billige Arbeitskraft
Noch ein Jahr länger behalten zu können
Nun drei weitere Jahre habe ich das noch mitgemacht
Befor ich mich traute zu sagen
Das ist nicht mein Leben

Confirmed after eight years of school
I stood there with my report card
Drawing, singing, religion good
Mother wanted me to become a typesetter
Like my grandfather
But it was no use
Too many applicants with Abitur
Father was more for bricklayer or carpenter
But me, small and skinny,
Pale from reading every night
Secretly by candlelight
Thoughts always elsewhere
And then on the construction site
That just wasn't possible
But I got an apprenticeship
In a shoe store
As a window dresser
That was ages ago
It's forgotten, that was once
That doesn't exist anymore
So you would think and yet
First year of apprenticeship

Daily routine as follows:
In the morning at seven to the bus
Bread and lunchbox in the briefcase
And admonitions, seriousness of life,
Apprenticeship years are not etc,
Then at the company
Buying grapefruit, tea bags, yogurt
For the colleagues for breakfast
Then unpacking goods, putting them in the warehouse
Sticking labels, then changing light bulbs
Lunch break
Then in the shop window shoes, dusting glass plates
Then greasing work boots in the basement
Seventeen o'clock end of work
That was ages ago...
Second year of apprenticeship
60 Marks a month
Daily routine exactly as in the first
Only every fortnight night work
But we were allowed to eat a warm meal in the evening at the company's expense
I had the first steak of my life at fourteen
Once the boss sat down with us
And ordered a minced meat roll
And told us how he started
With a peddler's pack, shoelaces
Through diligence and thrift
Today owner of a chain of stores
President of the German Shoe Retailers Association
My first steak, I threw it up again
That was ages ago...
Third year of apprenticeship
80 Marks a month
Daily routine as usual
Added to this was serving customers during peak hours
Then the administration of the rubber boot warehouse
Inflating advertising balloons
And growing discontent among us apprentices
We didn't know about unions
But still a spokesperson was elected
And that is in such a case
Always the most naive or the bravest
I was both, so I spoke
Result: I got the felt slipper warehouse on top of it
Wasn't allowed to participate in the company outing
And the colleagues ignored me
That was ages ago...
End of apprenticeship
What had I actually learned
Next to nothing
Then the exam
Everyone knew I would fail
But I passed
Graduation ceremony with all the trimmings
String quartet, speeches, journeyman's certificate, congratulations
Only the management was angry
And why? They would have liked to see me fail
To be able to keep me as cheap labor
For another year
Well, I put up with it for three more years
Before I dared to say
This is not my life
That was ages ago...
