It was my first night in that rooming house.

I had to lay there listening.
It seemed he was in the room.
This stranger with his melody,
Singing there in the gloom.
And he repeated it over and over again,
Such a soft and sinkin' sound.
It was kind of like a music box that was slowly winding down.
You see, he sang it, he hummed it,
Whistled it, and he strummed it,
He laughed it and he cried it,
He did everything but hide it.

So I lay there in that lumpy bed,
Countin' choruses instead of sheep.
'Til I banged on the wall and out I called,

I said, "It's kind of late for music sir,
Two hours til it's daylight"
He answered, "I need my music most

That's when I said,
"If I'm supposed to listen to you sir,
Just one quick question then.
Why in the hell do you sing one song
Over and over again?"

And this is what he said. ..

Of course we'd fight like cats and dogs,

Es war meine erste Nacht in diesem Pensionszimmer.
Im letzten Raum am Ende des Flurs
Hörte ich eine raue Stimme und eine alte Gitarre
Durch die papierdünnen Wände dringen.
Ein verrückter, sinnloser Kinderreim,
Der nichts bedeutete.
Doch zum ersten Mal von tausenden Malen,
Hörte ich ihn so singen...

Bis ich den G-Dur fand.
Wechsel runter zum alten E-Moll,
Bis der A-Dur zurück nach Hause rollt zu D.

Ich musste liegen und lauschen.
Es schien, als wäre er im Raum.
Dieser Fremde mit seiner Melodie,
Der da im Dunkeln sang.
Und er wiederholte es immer und immer wieder,
Ein so sanfter, versinkender Klang.
Wie ein Musikwerk, das langsam ausgeht.
Siehst du, er sang es, summte es,
Pfiff es und zupfte es,
Lachte es und weinte es,
Tat alles, außer es verbergen.

So lag ich im klumpigen Bett,
Zählte Refrains statt Schäfchen.
Bis ich gegen die Wand klopfte und rief:
"Hey Kumpel, ich brauche Schlaf."
Plötzlich Stille, dann sagte die raue Stimme:
"Es ist noch gar nicht lang her, Junge, da bezahlte man mich dafür."

Ich sagte: "Es ist etwas spät für Musik, Herr,
Zwei Stunden bis Tageslicht."
Er antwortete: "Ich brauche meine Musik am meisten
In diesen dunklen Nachtstunden.
Siehst du, ich probier's mit Rausch, mein Sohn,
Doch das zieht mich nur runter.
Trocken bleiben hilft auch nicht wirklich, Junge,
Denn meine Augen werden nass und ich ertrinke.
Lass mich bitte weitermachen,
Ich stünde in deiner Schuld.
Ich singe nicht zum Erinnern, Sohn,
Ich singe nur zum Vergessen."

Da sagte ich:
"Wenn ich dir zuhören soll, Herr,
Nur eine kurze Frage:
Warum zum Teufel singst du ein einziges Lied
Immer und immer wieder?"

Und das ist, was er sagte...

Er sagte: "Ich gab ihr die Musik, Sohn,
Sie gab mir die Worte.
Zusammen schrieben wir Lieder,
Wie Engel sie hörten.
Klar stritten wir wie Hund und Katze,
Doch das Leben ist kein Rosentraum.
Doch was wir auch taten, alle wussten:
Wir bildeten echt ein Team.
Ich weiß nicht mehr, ob ich ihr Unrecht tat
Oder sie mir Unrecht tat.
Doch nur weiß ich: Als ich sie gehen ließ,
Macht' mich das nicht frei.
Da sagte ich: "Du klingst wie wie-der-Da"
Er sagte: "Das bin ich schon.
Doch du kannst keinen Namen um dich legen, Junge,
Weil der nichts mehr bedeutet.
Ein Lied hat nicht viel Sinn,
Wenn es nichts zu sagen hat.
Sie zaubern konnte, Sohn,
Ich konnte nur spielen."

Er begann wieder zu singen.
Da driftete ich weg,
Vielleicht träumte ich, was ich hörte,
Von diesem Fremden mit seiner Melodie,
Der die Worte verloren hatte.
