The Old Cog Railway

How wonderful it was on Sundays
When the children were well-behaved
They were allowed to go to Nussdorf with their parents
In the afternoon
And young couples dreamed about it for weeks
Yes yes, the cog railway, that was a sensation
You could pick wildflowers as you ascended
Sometimes to the Kahlenberg and sometimes into blue eyes
Yes yes, that was once, that was long ago
And nobody talks about the sensation anymore
The old cog railway has long since become old iron
The young people of today don't want to travel on it anymore
It dreams of the Vienna Woods and looks up at the Kahlenberg one more time
And travels in spirit once more slowly slowly up
On its last journey, all of old Vienna comes along
And in the branches it rustles “Oh my dear Augustin”
And little flowers wave, eventually it's everyone's turn
Then it travels up to heaven, the old cog railway

That is a wisdom that bothers most people on earth
They just want to stay young forever, it would be wonderful

Others will come instead of those who now travel on earth
