Men so ei nått, som ein nyttårsrakett kom det ein raud og grøn hakkespett.
Hakka so hardt, slik at egget te gauken sprakk.

No vart det fest i heggji, ja no kom det beste fram.
Hakkespetten fekk seg ein orntleg heggji-dram.

Cuckoo's Child

Up high in a nest, there lie two eggs. It hangs high up in a hawthorn hedge.
The blue tits have much to watch out for!

For on a branch, there sits a hawk. He watches the nest. A brown-clad hawk.

And then one day in May, two eggs suddenly became three.
The cuckoo's egg was there, nothing could be done!
The cuckoo sang in the distance, a mocking cuckoo-cu.
Even if the cuckoo sings sweetly, even if its song is nice,
It's still a lout, a nasty bird-cheat!
Such a Cuckoo-child!

Poor little blue tits. Hatching a cuckoo, that won't do!
The blue tits have much to watch out for!

But then one night, like a New Year's rocket, came a red and green woodpecker.
Pecked so hard that the cuckoo's egg cracked.

Now there was a party in the hawthorn, now the best came forth.
The woodpecker got a proper hawthorn dram.
The cuckoo sang in the distance, a mocking cuckoo-cu.
Even if the cuckoo sings sweetly, even if its song is nice,
It's still a lout, a nasty bird-cheat!
Such a Cuckoo-child!
