Pero Paco, antes del año, empesó a vorvé de día
Y a bebé sin ton ni son
Y mordiendo er desengaño, la flamenca repetía
En los hierros del balcón.

¿Qué te pasa, ruiseñora?
Que tengo un nío de pena y selos en la garganta,
Que hasta el corasón me llora
Por siguiriyas, por soleares y por tarantas
¿Qué sombra lo tiene esclavo?
¿De qué rumbo mardesío
Viene este doló de clavo
¿Dónde está el agonisante
Que entre la noche y la aurora
Se muere cantando un cante
Mejó que la ruiseñora?

Al 'Tres de espadas' corrió celosa
Con la carita despavoría
Y vió a su Paco que con la Rosa
En una mesa se divertía.
Subió derecha ar tablao; ¡Aquí está la ruiseñora
Pa' lo que gusten mandá!
¡Lo de ese y yo s'ha acabao! ¡Vuervo a sé la cantaora!
¡Conque vamos a cantá!
-Pues se va a cumplí tu suerte! y al relámpago de un tiro
Er café se iluminó;
Ella vió llegá la muerte y, en el úrtimo suspiro,
De este modo le cantó:

¡Dios te ampare, ruiseñora!
Campanas doblen por er silencio de tu garganta;
Resen por su cantaora
Las siguiriyas, las soleares y las tarantas.
De un soplo m'has apagao
La lámpara de la vía,
Mira qué bien has pagao,
Lo que yo a ti te quería.
¿Donde está el agonisante
Que entre la noche y la aurora
Se muere cantando un cante
Mejó que la ruiseñora?

The Nightingale

At the tavern 'Three of Swords',
Amidst guitars and blackcurrant wine,
Oh, how the morning hours would sing
Flamenco with the nightingale's voice!
The party's over - so said Paco Olivares -
And he led her to the altar
And she, enchanted by him, turned as pale as orange blossoms
And never sang again.
But Paco, before the year was out, began to return at dawn
And drink without reason
And, consumed by her heartbreak, the flamenco singer would repeat
At the balcony's iron bars.

What ails you, nightingale?
My nest is filled with sorrow, and my throat is filled with stamps,
That even my heart cries
Seguiriyas, soleares, and tarantas
What shadow holds you captive?
From what distant sea
Comes this piercing pain
Where is the dying man
Who, between night and dawn,
Sings a song so hauntingly
That it surpasses the nightingale's?

To the 'Three of Swords' she rushed, consumed by jealousy
Her face ashen with dread
And there she saw her Paco, with Rosa,
Laughing at a table together.
She ascended straight to the stage; Here is the nightingale
Ready to sing whatever you desire!
That one and I are through! I am the singer once again!
So let's hear your requests!
-Your wish will be granted! And with the flash of a gunshot
The cafe was illuminated;
She saw death approaching, and in her final breath,
She sang these words:

God be with you, nightingale!
May the bells toll for the silence of your voice;
May the siguiriyas, the soleares, and the tarantas,
Pray for their singer.
With a single breath, you've extinguished
The lamp of my life,
See how well you've repaid,
The love I had for you.
Where is the dying man
Who, between night and dawn,
