Desde un tétrico hospital donde se hallaba internado
Casi acrónico y rodeado de un silencio sepulcral
Con su ternura habitual, la que siempre demostró
Quizá con esfuerzo o no, desde su lecho sombrío
Un enfermo amigo mío, esta carta me escribió

"Querido amigo, quisiera que al recibir la presente
Te halles bien, y que la suerte te acompañe por doquiera
Por mi parte, mal pudiera decirte que estoy mejor
Agobiado en mi dolor, postrado en mi lecho abyecto
Yo soy un pobre esqueleto que a mí mismo me da horror"

"La carta es para decirte que si podés algún día
Vení a hacerme compañía, tú que tanto me quisiste
Estoy tan solo y tan triste que lloro sin contenerme
Ya nadie suele quererme, todos se muestran impíos
De tantos amigos míos, ninguno ha venido a verme"

"Hoy yo te doy la razón y veo en mi soledad
Que esta llamada amistad, es tan solo una ilusión
Cuando uno está en condición, tiene amigos a granel
Pero si el destino cruel hacia un abismo nos tira
Vemos que todo es mentira y que no hay amigo fiel"

Llegó el domingo, y ansioso por aquel amigo leal
Penetré en el hospital, angustiado y pesaroso
Me dirigí silencioso, al lugar donde sabía
Que su lecho encontraría más allí yo lo encontré
Y asombrado me quedé al ver la cama vacía

Empty Bed

From a sinister hospital where I lie in a ward
Almost lifeless and enveloped in a deathly hush
With my usual tenderness, as I've always shown
Perhaps with effort or not, from my somber bed
A sick friend of mine, this letter he has wrote to me

"Dear friend, I hope that when receiving this
You're well, and that luck accompanies you everywhere
On my side, I could hardly tell you that I'm better
Overwhelmed in my pain, lying in my abject bed
I am a poor skeleton, that even I find horrifying"

"The letter is to tell you that if you can someday
Come and keep me company, you who loved me so much
I am so lonely and sad that I cry uncontrollably
No one seems to want me anymore, they all show themselves to be impious
Of so many friends of mine, not one has come to see me"

Sunday came, and anxious for that loyal friend
I entered the hospital, anguished and sorrowful
I walked silently to the place where I knew
I would find his bed, and right there I found it
And I was astonished to see the bed empty
