Lo amaban, ni más ni menos,
y se sacaba cada mañana
las espinas del sueño.
Juraba y maldecía
y se enredaba en la alambrada
de la mansa rutina.

Vivía como tú o como yo.
Los viernes por la noche
iba a buscar a su amor.
Fumaba tranquilo,
planeaba la semana
y ella le arrancaba el cigarro
y lo besaba.

Y un día lo mordió el virus el miedo.
Entendió que las mujeres
nunca tienen dueño.
Y temió que ella marchase,
que se agotase el manantial
sin un por qué.
Venció el miedo y faltó a la última cita,
no descolgó el teléfono
que aullaba en la mesilla.
Y el temor a la derrota
lo agarrotó como un calambre,
sin un por qué.

Duro, intenso y precario...
Se enfrentaba cada día
al oleaje en el trabajo.
Y una mañana la cobardía
lo paralizó en la puerta
y no entró a la oficina.

Volvía a despertar
y empezaba el periódico
como tantos -por detrás.
Vio y sintió la noche
del planeta y su desastre,
tuvo miedo y decidió
no salir a la calle.

Y ahí lo tienes encerrado en casa,
temblando como un niño,
sellando las ventanas,
para no ver, ni escuchar,
sentir, notar la vida estallando fuera.
Por miedo a sentir miedo
fue a la cama,
como una oruga se escondió
y envuelto entre las mantas
se durmió,
hizo humo el sueño
y se olvidó del mundo
por miedo a despertar.

Aún sigue dormido.
Pasaron los inviernos
y aún sigue escondido,
esperando que tu abrazo
le inocule la vacuna
y elimine el virus del miedo
y su locura.

The Fear Virus

I loved you, no more, no less,
And every morning I removed
The thorns from my sleep.
I swore and cursed
And I got tangled in the barbed wire
Of a meek routine.

I lived like you or like me.
On Friday nights
I went looking for my love.
I smoked in peace,
I planned the week
And she snatched the cigarette from me
And kissed me.

And one day the fear virus bit me.
I understood that women
Never have an owner.
And I feared that she would leave,

I was scared and decided
Not to go out into the street.

And there you have me, locked up at home,
Trembling like a child,
Sealing the windows,
Not to see, hear,
Feel, notice life exploding outside.
For fear of feeling fear
I went to bed,
I hid like a caterpillar
And wrapped in blankets
I fell asleep,
I smoked the dream
And I forgot the world
For fear of waking up.

I am still asleep.
Winters have passed
And I am still hiding,
Waiting for your embrace
To give me the vaccine
And eliminate the fear virus
And its insanity.
