První strejda ležel u okna a koukal do bílýho stropu
Po kterým běhaly černý koně jako v jedný starý dobrý písni.
Sestřičky mu zapíchly do těla šlaušek,
Kterým běžela medicína, co roztahuje plíce.

Děti za strejdou chodily a hladily ho po napíchnutý ruce.
On zatím nemluvil, protože mu nebylo nejlíp.
A zdálo se mu o Lucky Old Sun.

Ten druhej byl kapitán křižníku nebo kolotoče v penzi.
Optimista tetovanej jako když vybouchne kalamář.
Nosil všem pití, naději a noviny.
To starý slunce s děravym pajšlem - Lucky Old Sun.

Ve špitále přesluhoval, už moh' zase dejchat.
Čekal na místo v důchoďáku, protože neměl kam jít.
Bál se, že až se dočká, tak že už nebude Lucky Old Sun.

Odcházím z plicního domů po třech tejdnech
A kapitán je můj starej kamarád.
Určitě se spolu ještě příště sejdem.
Nejsem sentimentální blb,
Jsem rád, že můžu kapitána Slunce znát.

Třetí postel v pokoji jsem opustil já.
Měl jsem kliku na krásný doktory a na dobrý sestry.

V tom špitále, kde slunci píská na průduškách.

Snad se místo v důchoďáku ještě neuvolnilo.

Captain Sunshine

My uncle lay by the window staring at the white ceiling
Where black horses galloped like in some good old song's refrain.
Nurses stuck a tube into his arm,
Through which ran medicine meant to inflate his lungs.

Children came to see my uncle and stroked his punctured hand.
He was too unwell to speak.
He dreamed of Lucky Old Sun.

The other was a retired captain of some cruiser or carousel.
An optimist tattooed as if an inkwell had exploded.
He brought everyone drinks, some hope, and newspapers.

He was still on overtime at the hospital, but he could breathe again.

I am leaving the hospital after three weeks,

I left the third bed in our room.
I was lucky to have wonderful doctors and great nurses.

In that hospital where the sun whistles in the airways.

I hope the place at the retirement home hasn't been taken yet.
