Horsell Common and the Heat Ray (Early Version)

[Journalist:] Next morning, a crowd gathered on the Common, hypnotized by the unscrewing of the cylinder. Two feet of shining screw projected when, suddenly, the lid fell off!
Two luminous disc-like eyes appeared above the rim. A huge, rounded bulk, larger than a bear, rose up slowly, glistening like wet leather. Its lipless mouth quivered and slavered - and snake-like tentacles writhed as the clumsy body heaved and pulsated.
A few young men crept closer to the pit. A tall funnel rose, then an invisible ray of heat leapt from man to man and there was a bright glare, as each was instantly turned to fire. Every tree and bush became a mass of flames at the touch of this savage, unearthly Heat Ray.
People clawed their way off the Common, and I ran too. I felt I was being toyed with, that when I was on the very verge of safety, this mysterious death would leap after me and strike me down. At last I reached Maybury Hill and in the dim coolness of my home I wrote an account for my newspaper before I sank into a restless, haunted sleep.
I awoke to alien sounds of hammering from the pit, and hurried to the railway station to buy the paper.
Around me, the daily routine of life - working, eating, sleeping - was continuing serenely as it had for countless years. On Horsell Common, the Martians continued hammering and stirring, sleepless, indefatigable, at work upon the machines they were making. Now and again a light, like the beam of a warship′s searchlight, swept the Common - and the Heat Ray was ready to follow. In the afternoon, a company of soldiers came through and deployed along the edge of the Common, to form a cordon.
That evening, there was a violent crash and I realized with horror that my home was now within range of the Martian's Heat Ray. At dawn, a falling star with a trail of green mist landed with a flash like summer lightning.
This was the second cylinder.

Horsell Common et le Rayon de Chaleur (Version Précoce)

[Journaliste :] Le lendemain matin, une foule s'est rassemblée sur la lande, hypnotisée par le dévissage du cylindre. Deux pieds de vis brillante dépassaient quand, soudain, le couvercle est tombé !
Deux yeux lumineux en forme de disque sont apparus au-dessus du rebord. Une énorme masse arrondie, plus grosse qu'un ours, s'est lentement élevée, luisant comme du cuir mouillé. Sa bouche sans lèvres tremblait et bavait - et des tentacules semblables à des serpents se tortillaient alors que le corps maladroit se soulevait et pulsait.
Quelques jeunes hommes se sont approchés de la fosse. Un grand entonnoir s'est dressé, puis un rayon de chaleur invisible a sauté d'homme à homme et il y a eu un éblouissement intense, alors que chacun était instantanément transformé en feu. Chaque arbre et chaque buisson est devenu une masse de flammes au contact de ce Rayon de Chaleur sauvage et surnaturel.
Les gens se sont arrachés de la lande et j'ai couru aussi. J'avais l'impression d'être joué, que lorsque j'étais sur le point d'être en sécurité, cette mort mystérieuse s'élancerait après moi et me frapperait. J'ai finalement atteint Maybury Hill et dans la fraîcheur sombre de ma maison, j'ai écrit un compte rendu pour mon journal avant de m'enfoncer dans un sommeil agité et hanté.
Je me suis réveillé au son de coups de marteau étranges provenant de la fosse et je me suis précipité à la gare pour acheter le journal.
Autour de moi, la routine quotidienne de la vie - travailler, manger, dormir - se poursuivait sereinement comme elle le faisait depuis d'innombrables années. À Horsell Common, les Martiens continuaient à marteler et à remuer, infatigables et sans sommeil, travaillant sur les machines qu'ils fabriquaient. De temps en temps, une lumière, comme le faisceau du projecteur d'un navire de guerre, balayait la lande - et le Rayon de Chaleur était prêt à suivre. Dans l'après-midi, une compagnie de soldats est arrivée et s'est déployée le long du bord de la lande, pour former un cordon.
Ce soir-là, il y a eu un violent crash et j'ai réalisé avec horreur que ma maison était maintenant à portée du Rayon de Chaleur des Martiens. À l'aube, une étoile filante avec une traînée de brume verte a atterri avec un éclair comme un éclair d'été.
C'était le deuxième cylindre.
