'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there
The children were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter
Away to the window I flew like a flash
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear
But a miniature sleigh, and two tiny reindeer
With a little old driver, so lively and quick
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name

"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN!
On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away! all!"

So up to the housetop the coursers they flew
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too

And then, in a twinkle, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof

He was all dressed in fur, from his head to his foot
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot

And as I drew in my head, and was turning around
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound

His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath

He had a broad face and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk

And laying his finger aside of his nose
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Им снились сахарные пряники и сладости всякие.
И мама в чепце, и я в колпаке опять,
Уже собирались с мыслями зимою отдыхать.

Вдруг на лужайке раздался такой треск и шум,
Я мигом вскочила с постели, чтоб понять, что тут.
К окну помчалась я словно стрела,
Распахнула ставни, подняла раму стекла.

И вот, перед взором моим, что предстало вмиг –
Санки крохотные, и два оленёнка легких.
С маленьким кучером, ловким, проворным он был,
Вмиг узнала я – это сам Санта, мой милый!
Скакуны его мчались быстрее соколов,
И он им свистел, и кричал, и звал их по именам.

“Ну, ДЭШЕР! ну, ДЭНСЕР! ну, ПРЭНСЕР и ВИКСЕН!
Вперёд, КОМЕТА! ну, КЮПИД! ну, ДОННЕР и БЛИТЦЕН!
Наверх крыльца! Наверх стены за тобой!
Давайте, летите! Ускоряйтесь, вперёд, смелей!”

И вот, к крыше дома скакуны подлетели,
Санки полны игрушек, и Санта в них с зарёй.

И вот, в мгновенье ока, я услышала на крыше
Волнение и топот каждого копытца, товарищ.

Он был весь увешан мехом, с головы до ног,
А наряду его зола оставила свой след!

И вот, я наклонила голову, и развернулась вокруг,
И в печной трубе Санта появился, как вдруг!

Глаза его – как звёздочки, щёки – словно розы,
А щёки румяные, а нос – как вишни, без укора.
И ротик его весёлый, словно бантик завязан,
А борода на подбородке белее, чем снег, мой хороший.

Он трубку держал крепко в зубах своих,
И дым вокруг головы его вился, как венок.

Лицо у него широкое, и животик круглый,
Что трясся от смеха, как желе в миске, друг.

Он был толстенький и пухленький, эльф весёлый и старый,
И я рассмеялась, когда его увидела, хоть и прямо.

Подмигнул он глазом, и головой своей повертел,
Вмиг мне стало ясно, не стоит и бояться, мой свет.

Он ни слова не произнёс, сразу принялся за дело,
И все носки расписал, потом обернулся хитро.

Он пальцем коснулся носа осторожно,
И кивком головы, в трубу слово поднёс.

На санки вскочил, и командовал оленям он быстро,
И вмиг они взмыли в воздух, словно пух одуванчика, чисто.

И я слышала, как он крикнул напоследок прощаясь,
“Счастливого Рождества всем, и спокойной ночи вам, стараясь!”

Была ночь перед Рождеством, в доме тишина,

Истончённый ротик его как бантик завязан,
А борода подобна снегу белоснежна!

В зубах держал не потухшей трубки головку,
И дым изо рта его вился венцом, не любовью.

У него было лицо широкое, и животик круглый,
Который дрожал от смеха, как желе, от радости взглянув.

Он был толстенький и пухленький, эльф весёлый и всем известен,
И я рассмеялась, хотя и была к печали настроена!

Он глазом подмигнул, кивком головы обладал,
И стало мне ясно, бояться здесь нечего, стал.

Он умолк, претворив знания в работу,
Заполнив носки, и резко обернувшись, как докучно!

Он помолчал, в сторону только указал,
Кивком головы вверх по трубе он запоздал.

Запрыгнул в свой санный экипаж, оленям дал свисток,
И вмиг унеслись они вниз, как одуванчика лепесток!

И я услышала, крик его, прежде чем скрылся он из вида,
“Счастливого Рождества, тебе от меня и до скорого свидания!”
