The Dutchman is not the kind of man

In the morning Margaret brings him breakfast. She believes him.
He thinks the tulips bloom beneath the snow.
He's mad as he can be, but Margaret only sees that sometimes.
Sometimes she sees her unborn children in his eyes.
Let us go to the banks of the ocean,
Where the walls rise above the Zuider Zee.

Now dear Margaret re-members that for me.
The Dutchman still wears wooden shoes.
His hat and coat are patched with the love that Margaret sewed him.
Sometimes he thinks he's still in Rotterdam.
He watches tugboats down canals
And calls out to them when he thinks he knows the captain,
'Til Margaret comes to take him home again,
Through unforgiving streets that trip him though he holds her arm.
Sometimes he thinks that he's alone and calls her name.
The windmills whirl the winter wind.
She winds his muffler tighter.
They sit in the kitchen.
Some tea with whiskey keeps away the dew.
He sees her for a moment.
He calls her name out.
She makes the bed up, humming some old love song.
She learned the tune when it was very new.
He hums a line or two.
They hum together in the dark.
The Dutchman falls asleep & Margaret blows the candle out.

Le Hollandais

Le Hollandais n'est pas le genre d'homme
Qui garde son pouce coincé dans un barrage qui retient ses rêves.
Mais c'est un secret que seule Marguerite connaît.
Quand Amsterdam est dorée
Le matin, Marguerite lui apporte son petit déjeuner. Elle le croit.
Il croit que les tulipes fleurissent sous la neige.
Il est fou comme il peut l'être, mais Marguerite ne le voit que parfois.
Parfois, elle voit ses enfants à naître dans ses yeux.
Allons sur les rives de l'océan,
Où les murs s'élèvent au-dessus de la Zuider Zee.
Il y a longtemps, j'étais un jeune homme.
Maintenant, ma chère Marguerite s'en souvient pour moi.
Le Hollandais porte toujours des sabots en bois.
Son chapeau et son manteau sont rapiécés avec l'amour que Marguerite lui a cousu.
Parfois, il pense qu'il est encore à Rotterdam.
Il regarde les remorqueurs descendre les canaux
Et les appelle quand il croit connaître le capitaine,
Jusqu'à ce que Marguerite vienne le ramener à la maison,

Le Hollandais s'endort et Marguerite éteint la bougie.
