Doch wenn er gefangen
In armdicken Schlingen mit Tücke und List,
Dann brechen die Schwingen
Es trauert das Meer, das den Herrscher vermißt
Gefangen sein heißt für ihn tot
Die Sklaven der Erde,
Verhöhnt und geschunden, sie teilten sein Los,
Wenn er lag gefesselt,
Verblutend am Ufer, gebrochen sein Flug
Der Albatros war ihr Symbol
Doch ruft ihn die Weite, die endlose Macht,
Dann stürmt er ins Freie mit maßloser Kraft
Er schwingt seine Flügel, sprengt Schlösser und Riegel
Der Fesseln und Ketten
Und türmen sich Wände
Und greifen ihn Zwingen aus Wolken wie Blei

Albatross

He flies around the Earth,

The albatross knows no bounds,
He sails with dignity,
Traverses the airs as if he were a god
He follows their ships
On the high seas, through cliffs, his flight intoxicating
He seeks their path through the sea

On the oceans so infinitely vast,
Then he flies with fire and soars monstrously,
To the freedom of the seas.
But when he is captured
In thick ropes with treachery and guile,
Then his wings break,
The sea mourns the ruler it misses
To be captured is for him to die
The slaves of the Earth,
Mocked and abused, they shared his fate,
When he lay bound,
Bleeding on the shore, his flight broken
The albatross was their symbol
But the vastness calls him, the endless power,
Then he storms into the open with boundless strength
He swings his wings, bursts locks and bolts
Of the shackles and chains
And walls tower
And pincers grip him from clouds like lead
And lightning strikes him,
He fights with his wings to free the obstacle
He finds his way even in the hurricane
