Es ist Juli, Sommernächte fliegen ohne Hast,
Verweilen kurz und schläfrig,
über Dächern und dem frisch gestochenen Torf.
Eine Meute kleiner Jungen
Streift ein letztes Mal für diesen Tag
Durch das abendlich
Nach warmen Kühen duftende Dorf.
Dicke Mütter ziehn die Bengels zeternd
Hinter schnell geschlossene Türen,
Stoßen liebevoll den Kleinen zum Wassereimer hin,
Das Lachen muß ihm wohl vergehn,
Er sieht seinen Strullermann im Wasser stehn
Und denkt an Gerda.
Durch die Stube drängt ein warmer Duft
Von Großmutter und Schmalz und Wurst,
Der Vater stinkt und lacht
Und kneift die Frau.
Der Kleine läuft zum Vater hin,
Ein Kuß mit Bier und Bart
Und viel Gefühl,
Die Mutter streicht ihm zärtlich durch das Haar.
Sie trägt ihn lachend in sein Bett,
Sie küßt ihn, löscht das Licht
Und schleißt die Tür.
Er wartet, bleibt ganz still
Und steht dann auf,
Geht zum Fenster
Und macht es auf,
Sieht den Markplatz und die Nacht
Und spürt den Wind
Und sieht Gerda

Tanze, Gerda, tanze,
Tanz die ganze Nacht,
Brauchst sie nicht zu fürchten,
Wir geben schon drauf acht,
Daß nicht die Alten kommen,

Im Einhorn fängt die Nacht erst an,
Da sitzen Melker neben manchen andern,
Da steigt die Lotti, wenn sie voll ist, auf den Tisch,
Da krachen Stühle,
Wenn die Männer viel vom schweren Wein getrunken haben
Und klatschen brüllend mit
Wenn Lotti sich vergißt.
Da steht der Buckel auf
Und sagt, ist Zeit,
Die anderen gehen automatisch mit,
Sie ziehen geschlossen Arm in Arm
Nach draußen auf den Platz,
Atmen gierig Wind und ihren Fusel ein
Und die Lotti säuselt immer kräftig mit
Und sehn auf Gerda.

Brauchst sie nicht zu fürchten,
Wir geben schon drauf acht,
Daß nicht die Alten kommen,

Jetzt ist Nacht, erst richtig Nacht
Und der Marktplatz tobt und kracht
Und die Gören an den Fenstern brüllen mit.
Der Buckel sitzt au feinem Faß,
Die Lotti hängt an seinem Arm
Und beide starren auf die Mitte von dem Platz
Wo der Sohn des Melkers tanzt,
In seinen Haaren krallt sich Gerda
Und beide jagen aus der Menge jetzt heraus,
Sie verschwinden im Dunkel der Nacht
Und die Menge singt und lacht
Und will wie Gerda.

Gerda

It's July, summer nights fly leisurely,
Lingering briefly and sleepily,
over rooftops and the freshly cut peat.
A pack of young boys
Roams one last time for this day
Through the evening village
Scented with the warmth of cows.
Plump mothers scoldingly pull the rascals
Behind quickly closed doors,
Lovingly nudge them towards the water bucket,
His laughter must surely fade,
He sees his little man standing in the water
And thinks of Gerda.
A warm scent wafts through the room
Of grandmother, lard, and sausage,
Father reeks and laughs
And pinches mother.
The little one runs to his father,
A kiss with beer and beard
And much affection,
Mother tenderly strokes his hair.
She carries him laughing to his bed,
She kisses him, extinguishes the light
And closes the door.
He waits, remains very still
And then gets up,
Goes to the window
And opens it,
Sees the marketplace and the night
And feels the wind
And sees Gerda

Dance, Gerda, dance,
Dance the whole night,
No need to fear them,
We'll keep watch,
So the old ones don't come,

At the Einhorn, the night is just beginning,
Milkmen sit there alongside many others,
Lotti climbs onto the table when she's drunk,
Chairs crash,
When the men have drunk much of the heavy wine
And clap roaringly along
When Lotti forgets herself.
The hunchback stands up
And says it's time,
The others automatically go with him,
They walk out together arm in arm
To the square,
Greedily inhale the wind and their booze
And Lotti keeps on moaning loudly
And they look at Gerda.

Dance the whole night,
No need to fear them,

So the old ones don't come,

Now it's night, truly night
And the marketplace rages and crashes
And the kids at the windows yell along.
The hunchback sits on a fine barrel,
Lotti hangs on his arm
And both stare at the center of the square
Where the milkman's son dances,
Gerda claws at his hair
And both now chase out of the crowd,
They disappear into the darkness of the night
And the crowd sings and laughs
And wants to be like Gerda.
