Es ist Juli, Sommernächte fliegen ohne Hast
Verweilen kurz und schläfrig
Über Dächern und dem frisch gestochenen Torf
Eine Meute kleiner Jungen streift ein letztes Mal für diesen Tag
Durch das abendlich nach warmen Kühen duftende Dorf
Dicke Mütter ziehn die Bengels zeternd hinter schnell geschlossene Türen
Stoßen liebevoll den Kleinen zum Wassereimer hin
Das Lachen wird ihm dort vergehn
Er sieht seinen Strullermann im Wasser stehn
Und denkt an Gerda

Durch die Stube drängt ein warmer Duft
Von Großmutter und Schmalz und Wurst
Der Vater stinkt und lacht und kneift die Frau
Der Kleine läuft zum Vater hin ein Kuss mit Bier und Bart
Und viel Gefühl
Die Mutter streicht ihm zärtlich durch das Haar
Sie stößt ihn lächelnd durch das Licht, er wartet, bleibt ganz still
Und den Text vergisst er manchmal, kann schon sein
Doch manchmal fällt es ihm wieder ein
Sieht den Marktplatz und die Nacht
Und spürt den Wind
Und sieht Gerda (Singt!)

Du brauchst sie nicht zu fürchten
Dass nicht die Alten kommen

Im Goldenen Einhorn fängt die Nacht erst an
Da sitzen Melker neben manchen andern
Da steigt die Lotti, wenn sie voll ist, auf den Tisch
Da krachen Stühle, wenn die Männer viel vom schweren Wein getrunken haben
Und klatschen brüllend mit, wenn Lotti sich vergisst
Dann steht der Buckel auf und sagt, ist Zeit
Die anderen gehen automatisch mit
Sie ziehen geschlossen Arme draußen auf den Platz
Atmen gierig Wind und ihren Fusel ein
Und die Lotti säuselt immer kräftig mit
Und sehn auf Gerda (Hoppa!)

Wir geben schon drauf acht

Jetzt ist Nacht, erst richtig Nacht
Und der Marktplatz tobt und kracht
Und die Gören an den Fenstern brüllen mit
Der Buckel sitzt au feinem Fass
Die Lotti hängt an seinem Arm
Und beide starren auf die Mitte von dem Platz
Wo der Sohn des Melkers tanzt
In seinen Haaren krallt sich Gerda
Und beide jagen aus der Menge jetzt heraus
Sie verschwinden im Dunkel der Nacht
Und die Menge singt und lacht
Und will wie Gerda

Gerda

It's July, summer nights fly by without haste
Lingering briefly and sleepily
Over rooftops and freshly cut peat
A pack of young boys roams one last time for the day
Through the village, fragrant with the evening scent of warm cows
Heavy mothers scold their rascals behind quickly closed doors
Lovingly push the little one towards the water bucket
His laughter will fade there
He sees his little man standing in the water
And thinks of Gerda

A warm scent wafts through the room
Of grandmother, lard, and sausage
Father stinks, laughs, and pinches his wife
The little one runs to his father, a kiss with beer and beard
And much affection
Mother strokes his hair tenderly
She pushes him with a smile through the light, he waits, stays very still
And sometimes he forgets the words, it can happen
But sometimes he remembers them again
Sees the market square and the night
And feels the wind
And sees Gerda (Sings!)

Dance the whole night
You don't need to fear
That the elders might come

In the Golden Unicorn, the night is just beginning
There sit milkers alongside many others
Lotti climbs onto the table when she's drunk
Chairs crash when the men have drunk too much heavy wine
And clap along roaring when Lotti forgets herself
Then the hunchback stands up and says it's time
The others automatically go with him
They step outside onto the square, arms linked
Greedily breathe in the wind and their booze
And Lotti keeps on sighing loudly
And they look at Gerda (Hoppa!)

We'll keep watch
That the elders won't come

Now it's night, truly night
And the market square rages and crashes
And the kids at the windows roar along
The hunchback sits on a fine barrel
Lotti hangs on his arm
And both stare at the center of the square
Where the milker's son dances
Gerda claws at his hair
And both now chase out of the crowd
They disappear into the darkness of the night
And the crowd sings and laughs
And wants to be like Gerda
