Market Day

When the kids are at eight already
Sitting by the hot dog stand,
Slathering ketchup around their mouths,
The sausage starts to sweat.
When old Emmes at the eel stand
Oils his cartilage once more,
With his thumbnail, he peels an eel,
The skin from the fat,
And I unclamp my clamps,
Get off my bike roughly,
Dust the crown of my head,
Push my way to the vinegar jug,
Fish a pickle out of the pot.

I have market day, fish day, cauliflower time,
There I sit wide,
The kohlrabi knows what's up,
The can of ravioli stays closed,
I have market day, the market's in full swing,
Fresh protein through fish suits me.

And I push my way full of confidence
From one stand to another,
But suddenly I feel dizzy,
My senses, they want to wander.
I think my hamster whistles dirty jokes at me,
In a moment I see clearly,
A cucumber band plays rock by the notes,
Grapefruits dance the cha-cha-cha.
And I sit down for a moment, drink a sip
Of seltzer for the shock,
