Wie du doch das Treiben satt hast!
Immer wirft dich diese Flut
An ein unbekanntes Ufer,
Und dir fehlt schon lang der Mut,
Neuen Küsten zu begegnen.
Du bist müde, gräbst dich ein
Und beschließt für alle Zeiten,
Nie mehr heimatlos zu sein.
Und das nennt sich dann erwachsen
Oder einfach Realist.
Viele Worte, zu umschreiben,
Daß man feig geworden ist.

Was passierte in den Jahren,
Wohin hast du sie verschenkt?
Meistens hast du doch am Tresen
Das Geschick der Welt gelenkt.
Und die fiel nicht aus den Angeln,
Höchstens du fielst manchmal um,
Und für die, die du bekämpft hast,
Machst du jetzt den Buckel krumm.

Auch du wolltest wie die andern
Fest in einem Weltbild stehn.
Statt die Ängste zu durchwandern,
übst du, sie zu übersehn.
Manchmal jagst du für Sekunden
Deinen Zweifeln hinterher,
Doch aus Sorge um die Wunden
Bleibst du lieber ungefähr.

Und dann triffst du noch die Kämpfer
Aus der guten alten Zeit,
Fesche Jungs mit drallen Frauen,
Und ihr lächelt alle breit.

Was passierte in den Jahren,
Wohin hast du sie verschenkt?
Meistens hast du doch am Tresen
Das Geschick der Welt gelenkt.
Und die fiel nicht aus den Angeln,
Höchstens du fielst manchmal um,
Und für die, die du bekämpft hast,
Machst du jetzt den Buckel krumm.

Und ich frag mich, ob ich wirklich
So viel anders bin als du.
Zwar, ich kleide meine Zweifel
In Gedichte ab und zu,
Das verschafft paar ruhige Stunden,
Eigentlich ist nichts geschehn.
Ach, es gibt so viele Schliche,
Um sich selbst zu hintergehn.
Doch da muß jetzt was passieren,
Zuviel Zeit ist schon verschenkt,
Und es wird von den Erstarrten
Das Geschick der Welt gelenkt.
Und die fällt bald aus den Angeln.
Komm, wir gehen mit der Flut
Und verwandeln mit den Wellen
Unsre Angst in neuen Mut

What's Happened in the Years (Live)

You are so tired of the hustle and bustle,
This flood keeps throwing you
Onto an unknown shore,
And you have long since lost the courage
To meet new shores.
You are tired, you dig in
And decide for all time,
Never to be homeless again.
And that's called being grown up
Or simply a realist.
Many words, to describe
That you have become cowardly.

What happened in the years,
Where did you give them away?
Mostly you sat at the bar
And guided the fate of the world.
And it didn't fall off its hinges,
At most you sometimes fell over,
And you now grovel
For those you fought against.

You too wanted to be like the others
To stand firmly in a worldview.
Instead of going through fears,
You practice ignoring them.
Sometimes you chase
Your doubts for seconds,
But out of concern for the wounds
You'd rather stay roughly.

And then you meet the warriors
From the good old days,
Dashing boys with buxom wives,
And you all smile broadly.

What happened in the years,
Where did you give them away?
Mostly you sat at the bar
And guided the fate of the world.
And it didn't fall off its hinges,
At most you sometimes fell over,
And you now grovel
For those you fought against.

And I wonder if I really
Am so different from you.
True, I clothe my doubts
In poems every now and then,
That makes for a few quiet hours,
Actually nothing has happened.
Oh, there are so many tricks,
To fool yourself.
But something has to happen now,
Too much time has been lost,
And the fate of the world is guided
By the paralyzed.
And it will soon fall off its hinges.
Come, let us go with the flood
And transform our fear into new courage
With the waves
