Amikor leszáll az alkony, masíroz az ezredünk,

Nem tud aludni a hadnagy, papírt és ceruzát kér,
Otthon őt valaki várja, úgy hallja valaki sír,

A hadnagy az éj leple alatt, kiszökött a kórházból,
Vége van az ütközetnek, véresen száll le a Nap,
A hadnagy hordágya mellett, imádkozik már a pap,
Biztatja csendesen, halkan, a hadnagy nem hallja már,
A szíve lázasan dobban, s lelke a mennyekbe száll,
Levelet hozott a posta, ami a hadnagyról szólt,
A kapitány elolvasta, azután csendesen szólt,
Írjátok meg a leánynak, ne várja a hadnagyát,
Itt ássák örökös ágyát, itt ásták meg a sírját,
Csendesen leszáll az éjjel, megperdülnek a dobok,
Nem tudja senki, hogy otthon, valaki halkan zokog,
Csendes kis legénylakásban, meghalt egy gyönyörű lány,
Éles tőrt szúrt a szívébe, elment a hadnagy után.

When Our Summer Ends

When the end of our summer nears, and snow begins to fall,
I hope I'll still be sweet to you, I hope I'll still be your guiding light,
In our quiet little apartment, where the clock tolls the hour of goodbye,
The commotion of the streets, the cheers of the crowd.
Do you hear the bugle's call, can you hear the music's sound?
They're blowing the advance, they're sounding the alarm,
Come into my arms, my dear, for tonight you may be another's,
Tonight my regiment departs, and so does your humble servant.
As dusk descends, our regiment marches on,
Kiss me once more, my love, for who knows where we'll be,
By the flickering campfire, the regiment seeks rest,
The lieutenant cannot sleep, he asks for pen and paper,
Someone is waiting for him at home, he hears her cry,
He rests his head in his hands, and quietly begins to write,
The next day in the hospital bed, the lieutenant lies, his fate is sealed,
A bullet pierced his lung, hope for life has faded,
"Doctor, I wish to write a letter, though I know not why,
I long to see a little girl, who may not even be mine,
"Doctor, I beg you, please give me my uniform,
I will no longer lie in bed, I will defend my homeland,
"It cannot be," the doctor says, "Lieutenant, you are still too ill,
But under the cover of night, the lieutenant escaped the hospital,
The battle is over, the sun sets bloody,
A priest prays by the lieutenant's stretcher,
He whispers words of comfort, but the lieutenant cannot hear,
His heart beats feverishly, as his soul ascends to heaven,
A letter arrives from the post, bearing news of the lieutenant,
The captain reads it silently, then speaks in a somber tone,
"Inform the woman, her lieutenant will not return,
Here they dug his eternal bed, here they buried his soul,
Nightfall descends, the drums beat,
None know of the quiet weeping in a distant home,
In our humble little apartment, a beautiful girl has died,
She pierced her heart with a sharp blade, she followed the lieutenant to the other side.
