De bon matin me suis levé c′était dimanche
A la carriole j'ai attelé la jument blanche
Pour m′en aller au marché
Dans le chef-lieu du comté
Paraît qu'y avait des généraux à vendre
Mais le soleil écrasait tant la route blanche
La jument s'arrêtait si souvent sous les branches
Que lorsque je fus rendu
On n′m′avait pas attendu
Et tous les généraux étaient vendus
Pourtant là-bas tout au fond du champ de foire
Par un coup d'chance il en restait encore un
Il n′était pas couvert de gloire
Mais avec un peu d'ripolin
Il pouvait faire encore très bien
J′l'ai échangé contre un cageot de pommes pas mûres
Quatre choux-fleurs et une tartine de confiture
Tout ça pour un général
C′était vraiment pas trop mal
Et puis je l'ai chargé dans ma voiture
A la maison on m'a fait des reproches amers
Encore une fois paraît que j′m′étais laissé faire
Un Général dans c't′état
Ça valait beaucoup moins qu'ça
Mais puisque c′était fait tant pis pour moi
Et puis les gosses ont eu peur de sa moustache
Elle était rousse et ça les faisait pleurer
On lui a coupé d'un côté
Mais l′chien s'est mis à aboyer

On s'est quittés en vrais héros
A la maison la vie a r′pris sans aventure
Y a plus personne pour nous chiper des confitures

General for Sale

I woke up early, it was Sunday morning,
Hitched the white mare to the cart I was adorning.
Off to the market I went,
In the county seat, my intent,
They said there were Generals for sale, can you believe?
But the sun beat down on the white road, a reprieve,
The mare kept stopping under the branches so green,
That by the time I arrived on the scene,
They hadn't waited for me, it would seem,
And all the Generals had been sold, my dear.
Yet, there at the back of the fairground, I swear,
By a stroke of luck, there was still one there.
He wasn't covered in glory, I confess,
But with a bit of polish, no less,
He could still do very well, I'd assess.
I traded him for a crate of unripe apples, so tart,
Four cauliflowers, and a slice of jam on a cart.
All that for a General, a work of art,
It really wasn't too bad, a brand new start.
And then I loaded him into my car, with care.
At home, I faced bitter reproaches, I swear.
Once again, it seems I'd been taken, it's fair,
A General in this state, beyond compare,
Was worth much less than that, I declare.
But since it was done, too bad for me, I confess,
And then the kids were scared of his mustache, no less,
It was red and it made them cry, I confess.
We cut it off on one side, to redress,
But the dog started barking, causing distress,
So we left the other half, I confess.
He did nothing to avoid soiling his fine attire,
From time to time he peeled a few vegetables, by the fire,
Or repaired the stepladder, higher and higher,

But he couldn't even play the piano, much to my ire.
Yet some evenings, some summer evenings so fair,
The General would sit on the straw, without a care,
And his eyes lost in the vastness, beyond compare,
He would tell us about his battles, everywhere.
He spoke to us of the Dardanelles, with pride,
When he was just a Colonel, by his side.
And of the Eastern campaign, he couldn't hide,
When he was just a Commander, with stride.
The Napoleonic epic, he did confide,
When he was just a Captain, with pride.
And then the Hundred Years' War, he cried,
When he was just a Lieutenant, he sighed.
The Crusades and Pepin the Short, he applied,
When he was just a Sergeant-Chief, he tried.
And Hannibal's elephants, he defied,
When he was just a Corporal, he cried.
Thermopylae, Leonidas, he implied,
When he was just a second-class, he sighed.
And Ramses II, the first war, he cried,
When his mother was a canteen keeper, he sighed.
And the General until dawn, with pride,
Unwound the thread of his immense story, wide.
Then he fell asleep on his haystack, he tried,
And we without speaking, side by side,
We dreamed of glory, with pride.
He stayed with us like that, you see,
Until autumn, so free.
Without working, without finding life monotonous, you see,
It even surprised us, so free,
To learn from the priest, you see,
That he had made two twins with the maid, so free.
And then one fine morning, you see,

He entered without even knocking, you see,
