To get to my office, my dear,
I had bought myself a car,
A lovely front-wheel drive,
That sped like the wind so far.
It was July of '39,
I puffed up like a proud ox,
In my bourgeois delight,
To have a car of my own, by jove!
But September came, and off to war I went,
Eight months later, upon my return,
My eleven-horsepower beauty was requisitioned,
Streng verboten, a temporary concern.
To get to my office, my dear,
So I bought myself a motorbike,
A handsome little moped,
Doing forty kilometers an hour,
Astride my puttering steed.
I puffed up like a proud ox,
In my bourgeois delight,
To have a motorbike of my own.
It hardly used any petrol, you see,
But "hardly any" was still too much,
They took away my license, alas,
I had to sell my motorbike, it was such.
To get to my office, my dear,
So I bought myself a bicycle,
A beautiful one, all nickel-plated,
With a chain and two keys,
Mounted on brand new tires, elated.
I puffed up like a proud ox,
In my bourgeois delight,
To have a bicycle of my own.
I had a dozen of them, one after another,
They were stolen periodically, bother!
As each one was worth the price of a Citroën,
I was ruined quite rapidly, you know.
To get to my office, my dear,
So I took the metro instead,
It didn't cost very much,
And it was warm in the winter, I said.
Alma, Iéna, and Marboeuf,
I puffed up like a proud ox,
In my bourgeois delight,
To get home so quickly, by Jove!
Alas, to save on electricity,
They closed many stations, you see,
And then the entire line, eventually,
Was abolished without remission, sadly.
To get to my office, my dear,
I put on two good shoes,
And I walked four times a day,
The journey there and back, it's true.
The Tuileries, the Pont-Neuf,
I puffed up like a proud ox,
Proud to suffer my corns,
For such a charming decor.
Alas, soon I'll have no more shoes,
The cobbler no longer resoles,
But as a prudent and insightful man,
I have planned for the future, I can.
I will learn tomorrow,
To stand on my hands,
I won't go very fast, of course,
But I won't wear out any more shoes.
I'll see the world upside down,
It might be more fun, you see,
I won't lose anything, I vow,
The world isn't funny right-side up anyhow.
