Gangā taraṅga ramaṇīya jaṭā kalāpaṃ
My hair, like beautiful waves of the Ganges, adorns me.
Gaurī nirantara vibhūṣita vāma bhāgaṃ
My left side is constantly decorated by Gauri.
Nārāyaṇa priyamanaṅga madāpahāraṃ
I am the beloved of Narayana, who relieves all intoxication.

Vācāmagocaramaneka guṇa svarūpaṃ
My form is full of many qualities that are beyond words.
Vāgīśa viṣṇu sura sevita pāda padmaṃ
I am the lotus feet of Vagisa Vishnu, who is served by the gods.
Vāmeṇa vigraha varena kalatravantaṃ
With my left side, I am the one with a consort.

Bhūtādipaṃ bhujaga bhūṣaṇa bhūṣitāṅgaṃ

I wear a tiger skin, have matted hair, and three eyes.
Pāśāṅkuśābhaya varaprada śūlapāṇiṃ
My hands hold a noose, a goad, a fearsome weapon, and a boon.

Sītāṃśu śobhita kirīṭa virājamānaṃ
I am adorned with a crown that shines with the light of the moon.
Bālekṣaṇātala viśoṣita pañcabāṇaṃ
Five arrows are withered from my blazing eyes.
Nāgādhipā racita bāsura karṇa pūraṃ
The serpent king has made me earrings to fill my ears.

Pañcānanaṃ durita matta mataṅgajānāṃ
I am the five-faced one, the destroyer of the pride of wicked elephants.
Nāgāntakaṃ dhanuja puṅgava pannāgānāṃ
I am the end of serpents, the best of archers, and the master of all snakes.
Dāvānalaṃ maraṇa śoka jarāṭavīnāṃ
I am the fire that burns up death, sorrow, old age, and diseases.

Tejomayaṃ saguṇa nirguṇamadvitīyaṃ
I am full of brilliance, with and without qualities, second to none.
ānanda kandamaparājita maprameyaṃ
I am the boundless joy, unconquerable, and incomprehensible.
Nāgātmakaṃ sakala niṣkaḷamātma rūpaṃ
I am of the nature of the serpent, my true self is complete and free.

āśāṃ vihāya parihṛtya paraśya nindāṃ
Give up all desires, abandon the slander of others.
Pāpe rathiṃ ca sunivārya manassamādhau
In the depths of your mind, you should control your sinful desires.
ādhāya hṛt-kamala madhya gataṃ pareśaṃ
Place me, the supreme Lord, in the center of your heart lotus.

Rāgādhi doṣa rahitaṃ svajanānurāgaṃ
I am free from all passions and defects, full of love for my devotees.
Vairāgya śānti nilayaṃ girijā sahāyaṃ
I am the abode of detachment and peace, accompanied by the goddess.
Mādhurya dhairya subhagaṃ garaḷābhirāmaṃ
I am full of sweetness, patience, and auspiciousness, beautiful to behold.

Vārāṇasī pura pate sthavanaṃ śivasya
This praise of Shiva, the Lord of Varanasi, is explained.
Vyākhyātam aṣṭakamidaṃ paṭhate manuṣya
If a person recites this Ashtakam,
Vidyāṃ śriyaṃ vipula saukhyamananta kīrtiṃ
They will attain knowledge, wealth, great happiness, and endless fame.
Samprāpya deva nilaye labhate ca mokṣam ||
They will gain liberation in the abode of the Lord. ||
Viśvanādhāṣṭakamidaṃ puṇyaṃ yaḥ paṭheḥ śiva sannidhau
This Vishwanadha Ashtakam is very auspicious; whoever recites it in the presence of Shiva,
śivalokamavāpnoti śivenasaha modate ||
Will attain Shiva's world and enjoy happiness with Shiva. ||
