Cuando llueve me dan no sé qué
Las estatuas.
Nunca pueden salir en pareja
Con paraguas,
Y se quedan como en penitencia,
Solitarias.

Señalando la fatalidad
En las plazas,
Miran serias pasar cochecitos
Y mucamas.
No se ríen porque no tuvieron
Nunca infancia.

Marionetas
Grandes, quietas,
Con ellas no juega nadie.
Pero si una sombra mala
Para siempre las borrase,
Qué dolor caería
Sobre Buenos Aires.

Cuando llueve y me voy a dormir
Las estatuas
Velan pálidas hasta que llegue
La mañana,
Y del sueño de los pajaritos
Son guardianas.

Su memoria procuran decir
Sin palabras
Y nos piden la poca limosna
De mirarlas
Cuando quieren contarnos un cuento
De la Patria.

The Statues
