There was only one gentleman from third class
Who pushed himself in a bit stupidly

We met a man we had greeted before
He introduced us to his daughter and his wife
When we got up on deck, the captain said
That the lifeboat couldn't be launched
It was the chains to some kind of hoisting device
That someone had forgotten

We went to the bar and got a free glass of champagne
And we toasted the empire and each other
Now the ship began to sink faster
And its pitch was quite large
Many jumped into the water
But we decided to stay on board

Then the ship rats left the ship to seek land
But we stood there on deck and held each other's hands
We thought, the sea is too big and cold and wild
And there was no room in the boats that had been launched
For even one more

Then the ship's orchestra played Nearer My God to Thee
It felt a little silly but still quite typical
For our time
We have lost the last shred of hope
