Det står ett träd i Stockholms stad
Det står vid Strömmens strand
Med kronan full av gröna blad
Och hög och mäktig stam
Men om man ser på nära håll
Syns spår av såg och spett
För det var här som striden stod på sommaren '71

Det fanns en man en potentat

Men allt, han såg i Stockholms stad

Tills allt blev rök och damm
Och så en dag så stod han där
Och såg på trädets stam

Men då steg stadens borgare
Och pack och pöbel fram
Ja, alla dom som älskade
Det vackra som försvann

Man slogs mot yxa
Man slogs mot såg
Man slogs mot järn och spett
Till sist fann maktens män för gott
Att blåsa till reträtt

Har gått vid Strömmens strand

The Tree

There is a tree in the city of Stockholm
It stands on the bank of the Ström River
With a crown full of green leaves
And a tall and mighty trunk
But if you look closely
You can see traces of saws and pickaxes
For this is where the battle took place in the summer of '71

There was a man, a potentate
I won't say any more
But everything he saw in the city of Stockholm
He wanted to tear down
He hit and tore, he chopped and ripped
Until everything was smoke and dust
And then one day he stood there
And looked at the tree trunk

But then the citizens of the city rose up
And the rabble and the mob
Yes, all those who loved
The beautiful that was disappearing

We fought against axes
We fought against saws
We fought against iron and pickaxes
Finally, the powers that be saw fit
To call for a retreat

And many years, and many a day
Have passed by the banks of the Ström River
Our potentate died of anger
Few remember his name
But the tree is still there today
And shows you and me
That when the many come together
Power must yield
