The Ascent
IN THE NAME OF GOD, THE MOST GRACIOUS, THE MOST MERCIFUL
Has the Questioner asked about the punishment which must befall? (1) Which the unbelievers cannot avert? (2) Sent down from God, the Lord of Ways of Ascent, (3)
To whom ascend the angels and the Spirit on a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years: (4)
Therefore do be patient with a beautiful patience. (5) They see it far off, (6) But We see it near. (7)
The day that heaven shall become like molten brass, and the mountains like wool, (8) And no friend shall ask after friend, (10)
Though they shall see them;- the sinner would wish to ransom himself then from the Penalty of that Day even with his children, (11) And his wife and his brother, (12)
And his tribe that sheltered him, (13) And all that are in the earth;- if only it could deliver him! (14)
But, nay! it is a Fire, (15) Dragging forth all that is within them, (16) Discerning, penetrating. (17)
Man was created of a hasty nature. (19) When evil touches him, he is full of complaints, (20) And when good touches him, he is niggardly; (21)
Except those who pray, (22) Who_are constant at their prayers; (23)
And those in whose wealth there is a recognized right (24) For the beggar and the destitute; (25)
And those who believe in the Day of Judgment; (26) And those who fear the Wrath of their Lord: (27)
For the Wrath of their Lord is not such as can be taken lightly. (28) And those who guard their chastity, (29)
Except with their wives or their slaves, for as to them they are not blameworthy, (30)
But whoso seeks beyond that, then such are transgressors; (31) And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenants; (32)
And those who stand firm in their testimony; (33) And those who guard (the five) prayers: (34)
These will be in Gardens, honoured; (35) But what is the matter with those who disbelieve, that they rush on before thee in troops, (36)
On the right hand and on the left? (37) Does every man of them long to enter a garden of bliss? (38)
But, nay! for We have created them from the (base) substance they know. (39) Then, by the Lord of the Easts and the Wests, We are surely able (40)
To give in exchange for them a better (race), nor can We be exhausted. (41)
Therefore leave them to plunge and play until they meet that Day of theirs which they have been promised,- (42)
The Day when they shall come forth from their graves in hosts, hastening on as if towards a goal; (43)
Their looks downcast, abasement overwhelming them. Such is the Day which they had been promised. (44)
