Per sentieri segreti, per valli,
Senza casa, braccati, banditi...
Senza scarpe, affamati e inseguiti,

Noi puntammo a una sola vittoria:

Per fortuna avevamo vent'anni

Quando il buio discese su noi.
Ci cercammo, silenti e smarriti,
Ci donammo ad un libero sogno,
Pellegrini di zingare mete:
Per l'Italia vogliam libertà!

La speranza guidava il cammino
Mentre il cuore si apriva all'attesa.
Ma per molti 11 conto si chiuse:
Li baciò sulla bocca la morte.
Il suo nome? Nemmeno il suo nome!
Per adesso è figlio d'ignoti.
II bandito caduto tra i rovi
è una croce e nulla di più.

Per fortuna avevamo vent'anni...

Con il pianto negli occhi disfatti,
Su nel cielo cercammo una stella
Che vestisse il futuro di luce...

Twenty Years Was Our Age

Through concealed trails, across valleys,
Homeless, hunted, bandits...
Barefoot and starving, and chased,
Skyless, nameless, nor glorious,
Sunless, enveloped in night's mist,
Trudging across mountains and streams,
We aimed for a single triumph:
Freedom for Italy and for us!

Fortunately our age was twenty
And some were even younger.
We sang at September's dusk,
When darkness descended upon us.
We sought one another, lost and silent,
We surrendered ourselves to a free dream,
Pilgrims of gypsy destinations:
For Italy we demand freedom!

Hope guided our way,
As our hearts began to yearn for expectations.
But for many, the count ended:
Death kissed them on their lips.
Their name? Not even their name!
For now, they are only sons of the unknown,
The bandit fallen amongst thorns
Is a cross and nothing more.

Fortunately our age was twenty...

With a tight lump in my throat,
With tears in my weary eyes,
High in the sky, I sought for a star
That could clothe the future with light...
You shot me, my brother, in the shadows...
You struck me. It does not matter... I forgive you.
Today I have triumphed. I rejoice. You sing
Right by my side. Let's sing of freedom!
