Dal pane delle rose restan briciole e spine,
Una lunga attesa per un domani migliore.
Quando il sole tramonta sulle tue labbra socchiuse,
Quel sorriso un po′ triste vince più di tante parole,
Il sudore dei nostri nonni ha sfamato questa terra
E le fabbriche nelle orecchie ancora hanno il rumore.
I nostri padri grazie a Dio ci hanno fatto studiare

Ma è difficile riuscirci quando non sai più su che contare,
Un tempo si cantava "chi non lavora non fa l'amore";
Forse è anche per questo che oggi crescere un bambino
Da queste parti è un lusso che tarda ad arrivare.
E i giorni sul calendario si perdono come foglie ammalate d′autunno.
Due pesci smarriti che guardano il mare al di là di ogni ritrovo.
Quante le promesse abbandonate con il tempo,
Quanti baci impegnati per ogni stella in cielo;
Parlano di mercati, di sfide e competizione,
Al mantra che ci ammalia ruba il senso alle parole.
Agli angoli delle strade come negli anni del dopoguerra,
C'è che da per carità o si vende le sue cose,
Il nostro amore eroico vissuto in trincea ci fa sentir padroni di questo pane, di queste rose;
Di una terra che ci è madre, ci è maestra e d'amante,
Che ci piega anche la schiena ma che mai ci abbandona,
Torneranno giorni di festa,
Dicono rondini e campane che si abbracciano al tramonto
Da quando è nata la città, e i nostri baci allora
Avranno ancora quel vecchio sapore che ci ubriacava il cuore,
I sogni ad occhi aperti di poesie e di orizzonti, di lacrime... D′amori.

Of the bread of roses, only crumbs and thorns remain,

The sweat of our grandfathers has fed this land
And the factories in our ears still have the noise.
Our fathers, thank God, made us study

Perhaps that's why raising a child today
Is a luxury that is slow to arrive.
And the days on the calendar are lost like autumn leaves.
Two lost fish looking at the sea beyond any meeting place.
How many promises abandoned over time,
How many committed kisses for every star in the sky;
They talk of markets, of challenges and competition,
To the mantra that bewitches us, stealing the meaning from words.
On street corners, as in the years after the war,
There are those who give for charity or sell their belongings,
Our heroic love, lived in the trenches, makes us feel masters of this bread, of these roses;
Of a land that is our mother, our teacher and our lover,
That even bends our backs but never abandons us,
Days of celebration will return,
Say swallows and bells that embrace at sunset
Since the city was born, and our kisses then
Will still have that old flavor that made our hearts drunk,
The daydreams of poetry and horizons, of tears... Of love.
