Dit le beau garçon, qui avait des principes
Malgré son ardent désir de réussite

Les âmes m'embêtent, j'ai changé de bord

La nécessité nous rend accomodant
Le garçon signa ce pacte séduisant
Et sauvant son âme, à son corps consentant
Il suivit Satan jusqu'en son logement

Mais jetons un voile sur la sombre nuit
Qui pourrait décrire ce que diable fit?

On goûte à présent aux plaisirs interdits

Le petit jeune homme, au tout petit matin
Crie "À moi, fortune", mais l'or ne vint point
Il eut beau réclamer, hélas, il ne vit
Ni perles, ni saphirs, ni or, ni rubis

Il demande au diable "Le pacte est rempli
Où donc est cet argent qui m'était promis?"
"Allons", lui dit l'autre, "Pas d'enfantillages

Funny Devil

One evening, a charming lad of sixteen,
But without hope, and without a penny to his name,
Into the Seine's water, leaping from a bridge's height,
Prepared to drown his deep disillusions, my sweet.

At the final moment, before the mighty plunge,
A shadow emerged beside the young boy, so strange,
An elegant gentleman, about forty years of age,
With a firm hand, held him tight, turning a new page.

"I know your distress, darling," said his savior true,
"For I am the Devil, and I want your happiness, boo.
Follow me, and I promise, starting tomorrow, you see,
You'll have more gold than any human, just for thee."

But, a modern devil, I've changed my wicked style,
I'll tell you plainly, in a few words, or a long while,
Keep your soul, my dear, I only want your body tonight,
Just a single night, and you'll have my gold, shining bright."

"Mr. Lucifer, would you rather please take instead,
My soul, for my body, it's not for sale," the boy said.
Said the handsome lad, who had principles so strong,
Despite his burning desire for success all along.

"Darling," the Devil scoffed, "I insist, you see,
Souls bother me, I've changed my strategy.
I've got hell full of them, I don't know what to do,
And it's sometimes pleasant, darling, to be down-to-earth, it's true."

Necessity makes us accommodating, my dear,
The boy signed this seductive pact, banishing all fear.
And saving his soul, to his body consenting so free,
He followed Satan to his dwelling, just you and me."

But let's draw a veil over the dark, dark night,
Who could describe what the devil did, with all his might?
It's certain that in hell, as well as in Paris, they say,
One now indulges in forbidden pleasures, come what may.

The young man, at the break of day's first light,
Cries "Fortune be mine!" but the gold was nowhere in sight.
He pleaded and demanded, alas, he saw no sign,
Of pearls, or sapphires, or gold, or rubies so fine.

He asks the devil, "The pact is fulfilled, I see,
Where then is this money that was promised to me?"
"Come now," said the other, "No childish games, my dear,
Do you still believe in Satan, at your age, I fear?"
