The Little Match Girl

They tell in a northern town
Since the New Year's night of yore
Two hundred years ago
There went a star up yonder bright, when some one died
And a maiden it was said with golden hair
Who in the great frost had lost her way
And chilled and barefoot in the snow had wandered on
Carrying her matches, and shivering in the cold
And none of us cared for her
Not one little box of matches did we buy of her
And so to her father she couldn't go
And when it grew dark and she could walk no more
She crouched in a corner beside a cold wall all alone
And drew herself round
And saw no more
How she stole one little match out of the box and struck it
And looked at the little flame
