Κείνο που θυμάμαι απ' τα νησιά μας
είν' η αμμουδιά της Ζάκυνθος
της Κέρκυρας τα περιβόλια
της Ρόδου το μεγάλο κάστρο.
Κείνο που θυμάμαι απ' τα νησιά μας
είναι της Κρήτης τα ορεινά χωριά
τις ευωδιές της Χίου
της Κίμωλος τ' αστραφτερά νερά
της Σύρας την Απάνω Πόλη.
Κείνο που θυμάμαι απ' τα νησιά μας
είναι τα δυο φιδάκια που ερωτεύονταν
κάτω απ' τα μάρμαρα του ναού
ένα μεσημέρι καλοκαιρινό στη Δήλο
ένα μεσημέρι καλοκαιρινό στη Δήλο.

Στη Γαύδο, στη Φολέγανδρο και στα μικρά νησιά
βαριά σιωπή μαρμάρωσε, φωλιάζουν νυχτερίδες
ένα μπουκέτο άλικο το αίμα ξαγρυπνά
λευκοί αυλοί τα κόκκαλα μετρούν τις εσπερίδες
μονόφθαλμη περίπολος τη θάλασσα τρυγά
γύρω και πίσω στις σκηνές ουρλιάζουν οι σειρήνες.

Τη Λέρο, τη Μακρόνησο, τα Κύθηρα, τη Τζιά
πες μου ποιες τάχα σφράγισαν μισό αιώνα μνήμες. (χ2)

the great castle of Rhodes.

the fragrances of Chios
the shimmering waters of Kimolos
the Upper Town of Syros.
What I remember of our islands
are the two snakes that fell in love
under the temple's marble
at a summer afternoon in Delos
at a summer afternoon in Delos.

Gavdos, Folegandros and the small islands
heavy silence turned into marble, bats are nesting
a scarlet bouquet the blood stays awake
white flutes the bones are counting the evening stars
a one-eyed patrol is harvesting the sea
around and behind the scenes the sirens are howling.

Leros, Makronisos, Kythira, Tzia
tell me which ones sealed half a century of memories. (x2)
