Parhi namaaj te niyaaz na sikheya
Teriya kis kamm parhiya namaaza'n
Ilm parheya te amal na kita
Te teriya kis kamm kitiya waaja'n
Na ghar dithaa na ghar wala ditha
Teriya kis kamm ditiya niyaza'n
Bulleh shah, pta tad lag si
Jad chirhi fasee hath baaza'n

Makke'y geya'n gall mukdi naahi
Bhave sau sau jumma'n parhaayiye
Ganga geya'n gall mukdi naahi
Bhave sau sau gote'y khayiye
Gaya geya'n gall mukdi naahi
Bhave sau sau pand parhayiye

Na mai pooja paath jo keeti

Loved One, I Can't Take the Pain Anymore

I read the scriptures and learned fasting
My love, what's the use of my studying scriptures?
I gained knowledge and did not practice
So my dear, what use do you have for the scriptures?
I neither found a home nor saw the one who owns it
My love, what good is fasting for you?
Bulleh Shah, you have asked the painful question
When the net entraps a bird's wings

Going to Mecca, the path is not clear
Even if you pray a hundred Fridays
Going to the Ganges, the path is not clear
Even if you bathe a hundred times at the holy sites
Going to Gaya, the path is not clear
Even if you invite a hundred priests
Bulleh Shah, the path will only be clear
When you surrender your heart to me

I do not worship or pray
Nor do I bathe in the Ganges
I do not read the five daily prayers
Or twirl the prayer beads
I do not observe the three-day fast
Nor do I perform the forty-day retreat
Bulleh Shah has found his guide
Who has forgiven him for all this
