En söndag uti Skövde, om middan klockan två
En man stod på perrongen och vänta på sitt tåget
Med sex Albyl på fickan och sista fimpen tänd
Reserverad sittplats till Stockholm Central, han skulle åka hem

Då kom där in på spåret ett snälltåg ifrån norr
Och arton och tjufem steg han av i Göteborg
Han såg på Drottningtorget förvånad, blek och skrämd
Och biljetten kosta med sittplatstillägg trettifre och fyrtifem

Han drack en kopp espresso på fiket vid entrén
Och köpte cigaretter och Året Runt och Se
Sen ringde han ett samtal och sen så gick han ut
Till expressen som går från Göteborg klockan arton och femtisju

Han hittade en plats som var ledig intill dörrn
Biljetten fick han lösa direkt av konduktörn
Där satt han ganska stilla och såg hur mörkret föll
Och förr'n man kommit till Malmö tog han en smörgås och en öl

Han gick omkring på kajerna när han kommit fram
I mörkret stod han länge och såg mot Köpenhamn
Sen gick han upp till Kramers, men där var redan stängt
Så han sprang tillbaks och fick tåget som avgår noll och tjugofem

Han fråga efter sovplats, men allt var redan slut
Och biljetten andra klass kosta kronor sextiosju
Försökte sen att sova me'ns han mot Stockholm for
Och när klockan slog kvart i nio, då steg han in på sitt kontor

The Journey Home

One Sunday in Skövde, at two o'clock in the afternoon
A man stood on the platform and waited for his train
With six Albyls in his pocket and his last lit cigarette
Reserved seat to Stockholm Central, he was going home

Then a slow train from the north came into the track
And at eighteen and twenty-five he stepped off in Gothenburg
He looked at Drottningtorget in surprise, pale and frightened
And the ticket cost thirty-three and forty-five with seat reservation

He had a cup of espresso at the café by the entrance
And bought cigarettes and Året Runt and Se
Then he made a phone call and then he went out
To the express train that leaves Gothenburg at eighteen fifty-seven

He found a vacant seat next to the door
He had to buy the ticket directly from the conductor
He sat there quite still and watched the darkness fall
And before we reached Malmö he had a sandwich and a beer

He walked around the quays when he arrived
In the darkness he stood for a long time looking towards Copenhagen
Then he went up to Kramers, but it was already closed
So he ran back and caught the train that leaves at zero twenty-five

He asked for a sleeper, but they were all sold out
And the second-class ticket cost sixty-seven kronor
He tried to sleep as he headed for Stockholm
And when the clock struck a quarter to nine, he entered his office
