In un cassetto fra tante cose vecchie

Trovai la foto di un volto familiare
Era mio nonno quando era militare
Corsi da lui gridando
"Guarda nonno cos'ho trovato lassù, lassù in solaio"
E nel suo volto io vidi un mutamento
Mi strinse a sé e mi volle raccontare
"Ero un Alpino tanti anni fa, giovane e bello come il tuo papà
Questo cappello con la penna nera, sarà il ricordo che ti lascerò"
Ricordo il nonno che era sempre così forte
Con quella foto lo feci emozionare
Con la sua mente tornò a quei vent'anni
Quando la guerra gli rubò la gioventù
Restò in silenzio
Capii stava pensando ai vecchi amici e al suo reggimento
Mi accarezzò e disse: "Voglio pregare"
Guardando il cielo incominciò a cantare
"Dio del cielo stai vicino a noi, ai vecchi Alpini, quelli come me
Quando saremo lassù in Paradiso, noi pregheremo per l'umanità"
Era passato poco tempo da quel giorno
Ricordo il pianto negli occhi di mia madre
Che si chinò e con voce tremolante
Mi diede un bacio dicendomi così
"Il nonno ha vissuto sempre come un bravo e vero Alpino"

Nonno alpino

In a drawer amidst a jumble of old things
A bit yellowed and somewhat faded
I found a photo of a familiar face
It was my grandfather when he was a soldier

I remember my grandfather, who was always so strong
With that photo I made him emotional
With his mind he went back to those twenties
When the war robbed him of his youth
He fell silent
I understood he was thinking of his old friends and his regiment
He caressed me and said: "I want to pray"

When we are up there in Paradise, we will pray for humanity"
