Старик

На листьях опавших дождь пишет дневник,
На тучи свинцовые смотрит старик.
Дождь кончится так же, как лето прошло,
Но никогда больше не будет тепло.

В свой дом одинокий вернется старик,
На гвоздик повесит он свой дождевик.
Смахнет пыль с пластинки, нальет себе чай,
И вспомнит навеки исчезнувший май.

На цыпочках в комнату входит зима,
В последней строке точку ставит она.
Над морем свинцовым затих чайки крик,
Среди теней дремлет уставший старик...

Old Man

The leaves of the branches are beginning to turn,
The grey clouds above watch an old man yearn.
The rain will cease as the summer has passed,
And the chill of the winter will soon be amassed.

Alone in his home, the old man will go,
And hang up his raincoat, worn and old.
He'll pour himself tea, his record he'll play,
And think of a May that's now gone away.

Winter will come creeping up on soft paws,
And the end of the song will follow her cause.
The seagulls have stopped their desperate cries,
And the tired old man will close his eyes...
