مِن أَيِّ عَهدٍ فـي القُـرى تَتَدَفَّـقُ وَبِأَيِّ كَـفٍّ فـي المَدائِـنِ تُغـدِقُ
وَمِنَ السَماءِ نَزَلتَ أَم فُجِّرتَ مِـن عَليـا الجِنـانِ جَـداوِلاً تَتَرَقـرَقُ
وَبِأَيِّ نَـولٍ أَنـتَ ناسِـجُ بُـردَةٍ لِلضِفَّتَيـنِ جَديـدُهـا لا يُخـلَـقُ
وَالماءُ تَسكُبُـهُ فَيُسبَـكُ عَسجَـداً وَالأَرضُ تُغرِقُها فَيَحيـا المُغـرَقُ
تُعي مَنابِعُـكَ العُقـولَ وَيَستَـوي مُتَخَبِّـطٌ فـي عِلمِهـا وَمُحَـقِّـقُ
دانـوا بِبَحـرٍ بِالمَكـارِمِ زاخِـرٍ عَـذبِ المَشـارِعِ مَـدُّهُ لا يُلحَـقُ
مُتَقَـيِّـدٌ بِعُـهـودِهِ وَوُعـــودِهِ يَجري عَلى سَنَنِ الوَفاءِ وَيَصـدُقُ
يَتَقَبَّـلُ الـوادي الحَيـاةَ كَريمَـةً مِـن راحَتَيـكَ عَميمَـةً تَتَـدَفَّـقُ
فـي كُـلِّ عـامٍ دُرَّةٌ تُلقـى بِـلا ثَمَـنٍ إِلَيـكَ وَحُـرَّةٌ لا تُـصـدَقُ
حَـولٌ تُسائِـلُ فيـهِ كُـلُّ نَجيبَـةٍ سَبَقَت إِلَيكَ مَتـى يَحـولُ فَتَلحَـقُ
وَالمَجـدُ عِنـدَ الغانِيـاتِ رَغيبَـةٌ يُبغى كَما يُبغى الجَمـالُ وَيُعشَـقُ
زُفَّت إِلـى مَلِـكِ المُلـوكِ يَحُثُّهـا ديـنٌ وَيَدفَعُهـا هَـوىً وَتَشَـوُّقُ
في مِهرَجـانٍ هَـزَّتِ الدُنيـا بِـهِ أَعطافَها وَاِختـالَ فيـهِ المَشـرِقُ
مَجلُوَّةٌ فـي الفُلـكِ يَحـدو فُلكَهـا بِالشاطِئَيـنِ مُزَغـرِدٌ وَمُصَـفِّـقُ
أَلقَـت إِلَيـكَ بِنَفسِهـا وَنَفيسِـهـا وَأَتَتـكَ شَيِّقَـةً حَـواهـا شَـيِّـقُ
خَلَعَت عَلَيـكَ حَياءَهـا وَحَياتَهـا أَأَعَزُّ مِـن هَذَيـنِ شَـيءٌ يُنفَـقُ
وَإِذا تَناهى الحُـبُّ وَاِتَّفَـقَ الفِـدى فَالروحُ في بـابِ الضَحِيَّـةِ أَليَـقُ
يا نيلُ أَنتَ يَطيبُ ما نَعَتَ الهُـدى وَبِمَدحَةِ التَـوراةِ أَحـرى أَخلَـقُ
أَصلُ الحَضارَةِ في صَعيدِكَ ثابِـتٌ وَنَباتُهـا حَسَـنٌ عَلَيـكَ مُخَـلَّـقُ
وُلِدَت فَكُنتَ المَهدَ ثُـمَّ تَرَعرَعَـت فَأَظَلَّهـا مِنـكَ الحَفِـيُّ المُشفِـقُ
مَـلَأَت دِيـارَكَ حِكمَـةً مَأثورُهـا في الصَخرِ وَالبَردي الكَريمِ مُنَبَّـقُ
وَبَنَت بُيوتَ العِلمِ باذِخَـةَ الـذُرى يَسعـى لَهُـنَّ مُغَـرِّبٌ وَمُشَـرِّقُ
وَإِلَيكَ يُهدي الحَمدَ خَلـقٌ حازَهُـم كَنَفٌ عَلى مَـرِّ الدُهـورِ مُرَهَّـقُ
يَبنـونَ لِلَّـهِ الكِنـانَـةَ بِالقَـنـا وَاللَهُ مِـن حَـولِ البِنـاءِ مُوَفِّـقُ

Serenade of the Nile

In what age did you flow in the villages, and by whose hand were you lavished upon the towns?
Did you descend from the heavens, or were you gushed forth from lofty gardens, trickling streams?
And with what loom did you weave a new cloak for the two banks, which will never wear out?
You pour forth water which flows like musk, and you drown the earth, yet the drowned one lives.
Your sources confound the intellect, and both the confused and the determined are equal in their knowledge of you.
They acknowledged a sea abounding in virtues, its watering places sweet, its extent immeasurable;
Bound by its covenants and its promises, it flows in accordance with the path of loyalty and is truthful.
The valley accepts life, a generous gift from your two hands, overflowing and abundant.
In each year, a pearl is cast without price to you, and a free woman who is beyond belief.
The Nile asks every noble woman who preceded her, 'When will you change so that I may follow?'
And glory is a desire among the fair ones; it is sought after as beauty is sought and is loved.
She was escorted to the King of Kings, urged by religion and driven by passion and longing.
In a festival that shook the world, she swayed her hips and the East exulted.
Adorned in a boat, its helmsman urging it along, with a singer and a drummer on each bank.
She cast herself and her precious things upon you, and came to you longingly, her lover longing for her.
She bestowed upon you her modesty and her life. Is there anything more precious than these two things to give?
And when love reaches its peak and sacrifice is agreed upon, then the soul is most worthy of sacrifice.
O Nile, sweet is that which the guidance praised, and with the praise of the Torah you are most deserving.
The root of civilization is firmly established in your Upper Egypt, and its growth is fair, created upon you.
You were born and were the cradle, then you flourished and its guardian sheltered you with kindness.
Your lands were filled with wisdom, its heritage flowing in stone and precious papyrus.
And you built houses of knowledge with towering heights, to which the West and East hastened.
And to you, the people give thanks, who have found shelter under your wing throughout the ages.
They build for God's sake with spears, and God assists in the building.
