信濃の国は十州に
The country of Shinano spans ten provinces,
境連ぬる国にして
A land of many neighboring borders,

流るる川はいや遠し
And its flowing rivers run far.
松本伊那佐久善光寺
Matsumoto, Ina, Saku, and Zenkoji,
四つの平(たいら)は肥(ひよく)沃の地
Four fertile plains where the harvest thrives.
海こそなけれ物(もの)さわに
Though it has no sea, it abounds in wealth,
万(よろ)ず足らわぬ事(こと)ぞなき
Lacking nothing for its people.
四方(よも)に聳(そび)ゆる山々は
The mountains that tower on every side,
御嶽乗鞍駒ヶ岳(おんたけのりくらこまたがたけ)
Ontake, Norikura, and Komagatake,
浅間は殊(こと)に活火山
With Asama, an active volcano,
いずれも国の鎮(しず)めなり
Are the guardians of our land.
流れ淀(よど)まずゆく水は
The waters that flow without ceasing,
北に犀(さい)川千曲(ちくま)川
The Sai River and the Chikuma River to the north,
南に木曽川天竜川
The Kiso River and the Tenryu River to the south,
これまた国の固(かた)めなり
Are the fortifications of our country.
木曽の谷には真木茂(まきしげ)り
In the Kiso Valley, timber stands tall,
諏訪(すわ)の湖(うみ)には魚(うお)多し
And in Lake Suwa, fish abound.
民のかせぎも豊かにて
The people's livelihoods are prosperous,
五穀(ごこく)の実(みの)らぬ里やある
No village lacks the fruits of the earth.
しかのみならず桑とりて
Moreover, with mulberry trees and
蚕飼(こが)いの業(わざ)の打ちひらけ
The flourishing industry of sericulture,
細きよすがも軽(かろ)からぬ
Even the smallest contributions are not insignificant,
国の命(いのち)を繋(つな)ぐなり
Sustaining the life of our country.
尋(たず)ねまほしき園原(そのはら)や
The fields of Sonohara, a sight to behold,
旅のやどりの寝覚(ねざめ)の床(とこ)
And the inns of Nezame, a traveler's haven.
木曽の桟(かけはし)かけし世も
The Kiso Bridges, built in ancient times,
心してゆけ久米路橋(くめじばし)
Cross them with care, on the road to Kumēji Bridge.
くる人多き筑摩(つかま)の湯
The hot springs of Tsukuba, frequented by many,
月の名にたつ姨捨山(おばすてやま)
And Mount Obasute, renowned in moonlit verse.
しるき名所と風雅士(みやびお)が
These renowned landmarks, poets and aesthetes,
詩歌(しいか)に詠(よみ)てぞ伝えたる
Have immortalized in their songs and writings.
旭(あさひ)将軍義仲(よしなか)も
The brave general Yoshinaka,
仁科(にしな)の五郎信盛(のぶもり)も
And the valiant Ninshin of Nishina,
春台太宰(しゅんだいだざい)先生も
The erudite scholar Shundai,
象山佐久間(ぞうざんさくま)先生も
And the renowned educator Zōzan Sakuma,
皆此(この)国の人にして
All hailed from this land,
文武(ぶんぶ)の誉(ほまれ)たぐいなく
Their literary and martial prowess unmatched,
山と聳(そび)えて世に仰ぎ
Standing tall as mountains, their names renowned.
川と流れて名は尽(つき)ず
And the rivers that flow, their fame endures,
吾妻(あづま)はやとし日本武(やまとたけ)
Yamato Takeru, the legendary hero,
嘆(なげ)き給(たま)いし碓氷山(うすいやま)
Lamented at Mount Usui,
穿(うが)つ隧道(トンネル)二十六
Twenty-six tunnels pierce its heart,
夢にもこゆる汽車の道(みち)
A railway's path through dreams.
一筋(ひとすじ)に学びなば
If we devote ourselves to learning,
昔の人にや劣(おと)るべき
Can we surpass the ancients?
古来山河(こらいさんが)の秀(ひい)でたる
Since ancient times, lands with majestic mountains and rivers,
国は偉人のある習(なら)い
Have nurtured extraordinary individuals.
