Abelard and Heloise, from Saint-Denis to the Paraclete Monastic Song: O quanta qualia
Abelard and Heloise, from Saint-Denis to the Paraclete Monastic Song: O quanta qualia
O quanta, qualia sunt illa sabbata
O how many and how great are those Sabbaths
Quae semper celebrat superna curia.
That the heavenly court is always celebrating,
Quae fessis requies, quae merces fortibus,
Which are a rest for the weary, a reward for the brave,
Cum erit omnia Deus in omnibus.
When God shall be all in all.
Vere Ierusalem est illa civitas,
Truly Jerusalem is that city,
Cuius pax iugis est, summa iucunditas,
Whose peace is eternal, whose joy is supreme,
Ubi non praevenit rem desiderium,
Where desire does not precede the thing desired,
Nec desiderio minus est praemium.
Nor is the reward less than the desire.
Quis rex, quae curia, quale palatium,
What king, what court, what palace,
Quae pax, quae requies, quod illud gaudium,
What peace, what rest, what joy is that,
Huius participes exponant gloriam,
Let those who share in its glory tell,
Si quantum sentiunt, possint exprimere.
If they can express how much they feel.
Nostrum est interim mentem erigere
Meanwhile, it is ours to lift up our minds
Et totis patriam votis appetere,
And with all our vows to seek our homeland,
Et ad Ierusalem a Babylonia
And after long exiles
Post longa regredi tandem exilia.
To return at last from Babylon to Jerusalem.
Illic molestiis finitis omnibus
There, when all troubles are ended,
Securi cantica Sion cantibimus,
We shall sing the songs of Zion in safety,
Et iuges gratias de donis gratiae
And the blessed people will give
Beata referet plebs tibi, Domine.
Unceasing thanks for the gifts of grace to you, O Lord.
Illic ex sabbato succedet sabbatum,
There, one Sabbath will follow another,
Perpes laetitia sabbatizantium,
The endless joy of those who keep the Sabbath,
Nec ineffabiles cessabunt iubili,
And the ineffable songs of joy
Quos decantabimus et nos et angeli.
That we and the angels shall sing.
Perenni Domino perpes sit gloria,
To the eternal Lord be eternal glory,
Ex quo sunt, per quem sunt, in quo sunt omnia;
From whom are all things, through whom are all things, in whom are all things;
Ex quo sunt, Pater est; per quem sunt, Filius;
From whom they are, the Father is; through whom they are, the Son is;
In quo sunt, Patris et Filii Spiritus.
In whom they are, the Spirit of the Father and the Son.
